Though not lovingly given at the time, the nickname “ducktail” now rolls off enthusiast's tongues with warmth and nostalgia. Porsche engineers at the time were trying to reign in the frisky rear end of the tail-happy 911, and the ducktail spoiler was born of those efforts. I love examples of iconic objects that have withstood the test of time—it’s hard for smart design to become obsolete. I first encountered the ducktail when I was 6 years old; my uncle owned a 1974 Carrera RS. Each weekend he would wash that car, spending hours meticulously attending to every detail, while my cousin and I watched from the sidelines, happy to feel part of the ritual. We all know that vision often fades with age, and sometimes my uncle would miss tiny puddles of water that had collected in that ducktail. When that happened, I’d make sure to sneak over and add a quick wipe down—that finishing touch was important to me.
