Pinky Lai: The Human Story Behind a New Hypercar Brand
By Patrice Meignan
I have always believed that the most interesting part of a machine is the human decision that comes before it: the moment someone decides an idea is worth pursuing, even when the outcome is far from certain.
On 12 November, I’ll have the pleasure of exploring that idea with Pinky Lai at TheArsenale Dubai. Our conversation is called “The Human Story of Starting a New Hypercar Brand.”
A designer who helped redefine Porsche
Pinky Lai’s work is part of modern automotive history. At Porsche, he was chief designer for the complete 911 (996) model line and led exterior design work on the Cayman and Boxster. These were not easy cars to imagine: they had to carry the weight of a celebrated heritage while helping Porsche move into a new chapter.
That balance—respecting what came before while having the courage to change it—is one of the reasons I find his journey so compelling. The 996 was a decisive break in the 911 story. Whether you love its shape or have had to learn to love it, you cannot ignore the confidence it took to put it on the road.
Beyond the sketch
Our conversation will look beyond sketches and specifications to the human side of creating something new: the uncertainty at the beginning, the people who choose to commit, the decisions that give an idea its character and the patience required to turn ambition into reality. I want to hear how a designer carries experience from one chapter into another without simply repeating the past.
Lai’s own path gives that discussion a remarkable perspective. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he left for Italy to study industrial design, continued his education in transportation design at London’s Royal College of Art, and began his automotive career at Ford before moving to BMW and then Porsche. In 2012, he founded Brainchild Design Group. His career is a reminder that a singular point of view can travel a long way—and that the route is rarely as predictable as the finished object makes it seem.
There will be no slide deck. Just a real conversation, in a room with people who care about design, cars and the ambition to make something that has not existed before.
