Apex AP-1 - Electric Sports Car

The Apex AP-1 is a road-legal, track-focused sports car built by British specialist Apex Motor around a mid-mounted turbocharged four cylinder and a Formula 1 style aerodynamic platform. At 620 kg with 400 bhp on tap, it hits 540 bhp per tonne, giving it hypercar-level acceleration in a car sized like a compact race prototype.

The Story

Apex Motor set out to bridge the gap between a track-day prototype and a usable road car. The AP-1 is the answer: a lightweight, mid-engined coupe with a carbon and composite body, engineered so that everything from the front splitter to the rear diffuser earns its place. Formula 1 style thinking, translated for a road registration.

Performance

The AP-1 runs a 2.3L Ford EcoBoost turbocharged engine, mounted mid-ship and paired with a Hewland JFR six-speed sequential gearbox. Peak output is over 400 bhp, and with a curb weight of 620 kg the power-to-weight ratio lands at 540 bhp per tonne, enough to fire the car from 0 to 100 km/h in around 2.5 seconds. Underneath, double adjustable dampers and unequal-length dual wishbones keep the platform predictable at speed. The aerodynamic package starts with a custom-machined front splitter and a central flat floor, adds large front diffusers to generate downforce and front-end grip, and finishes with a double-stage rear diffuser that stabilizes airflow at the top end. Despite the racing DNA, the AP-1 keeps 200+ liters of secure luggage space, USB charging, a rear-view camera and a heated laminated front windscreen as standard, so it stays usable on the way to the circuit.
