The Benetton B195 exhaust sculpture is a museum-grade artwork built from the original race-used exhausts of the Renault V10 that carried Michael Schumacher to his first Formula 1 World Championship in 1995, hand-finished by artist Mike O'Connor.
The Story
The Benetton B195 is the car that made Michael Schumacher a double world champion, delivering both the Drivers' and Constructors' titles in 1995 in one of the most competitive Formula 1 seasons of the decade. Under the bodywork sat a Renault RS7 V10, an engine whose sound defined an era of grand prix racing. These exhausts came off that very car after their working life on the grid, and were later reinterpreted for the F1 Exhibition in Madrid in 2023, where they were shown as sculpture rather than as spare parts.
The Artist
The piece was created by Mike O'Connor, whose signature Sentinel silhouette has become a recognisable language in contemporary motorsport art. Each exhaust primary and collector was hand-polished and reshaped by O'Connor's studio into a single, upright form, keeping the identity of the original component while giving it the presence of a standalone sculpture. The internal surfaces have been gold-plated, a nod to the noise and heat these tubes carried across a title-winning season, and a technical touch that lifts the piece well beyond a simple display.
The Piece
The sculpture is currently on display at the F1 Arcade in St James', London, giving it live provenance in one of the most visible motorsport venues in the world. It reads simultaneously as engineering artifact, contemporary artwork, and Formula 1 relic tied to a specific driver, a specific team, and a specific championship year. For a serious collector, it operates as the anchor piece of a Schumacher-focused collection or of a broader 1990s Formula 1 memorabilia set.
