Alfa Romeo Cuorerosso: The Heart Comes First

·3 min read

By Patrice Meignan — TRANSMISSION by TheArsenale

I have known Gilles Vidal for twenty years. So when Alfa Romeo put a new concept car on the Paris stage and his name appeared in the wider creative story around the show, I looked at it with the eye of a friend as well as that of someone who has spent a lifetime around cars. Let me say this first: bravo, Gilles. Cuorerosso has the kind of conviction I want a concept to have. It makes a point before it explains itself.

There is an important distinction. Cuorerosso is a concept car, not a production announcement. Alfa Romeo presents it as a design manifesto and a way to explore the brand’s future. The car was created by the brand’s Centro Stile. Gilles Vidal’s broader role at Stellantis places him in the creative context of the Paris presentation; I would not reduce a studio’s work to one name. That is precisely why the result deserves a closer look.

A red heart, without nostalgia

The name translates as “red heart,” and the car wears that idea openly. But Cuorerosso does not feel like a retro exercise. Its proportions are more interesting than any single styling flourish: a long, low body, a cabin set with intent, and a sharply cut rear that recalls Alfa Romeo’s coda tronca heritage without simply replaying it. The front combines the Scudetto with the brand’s “Trilobo” graphic, while the three-part lighting signature gives the face a distinct identity.

At 4.7 metres long and 1.98 metres wide, this is a substantial 2+2 concept. Alfa Romeo quotes a drag coefficient of 0.28 and a weight of 1,750 kg. Those are figures for the concept as presented, not a promise for a future showroom car. What matters to me is how the shape uses its scale: it looks planted and generous, yet the cut lines keep it taut. There is theatre here, but it is disciplined.

A cockpit with a point of view

Inside, Alfa Romeo talks about a “Magma Display” and a reconfigurable interpretation of its Cannocchiale instrument binnacle. I like that the cabin is not trying to disappear into a generic digital lounge. The language remains tied to the act of driving: instruments are treated as objects, and the driver still occupies the centre of the experience. That is a design decision, not just a screen specification.

The concept also sketches a multi-energy future for the brand, spanning electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid possibilities. Alfa Romeo has even described a hypothetical 2.9-litre V6 full-hybrid Q4 direction. It is a vision, not the technical specification of Cuorerosso, and there is no production powertrain announcement to report. I prefer the honesty of that distinction: a concept can open a door without pretending the car behind it is already signed off.

What a concept should do

A concept car does not need to give us a release date. It needs to make us feel that a brand still has somewhere to go. Cuorerosso does that through proportion, colour and a clear sense of occasion. It also reconnects Alfa Romeo’s emotional vocabulary with a future that will have to accommodate more than one kind of powertrain.

And personally, I am happy to see Gilles in the middle of a moment like this. Twenty years of friendship gives me no claim over the work, only a reason to say what I feel: congratulations, my friend. The Centro Stile has made a strong statement, and the wider design direction around this Paris show has real energy. Cuorerosso may remain a manifesto, but it is a manifesto with a pulse.
