Van der Valk NEXO: A Yacht Designed Around You

·3 min read

A 30-metre yacht designed around how you feel.

I have always thought that a yacht is more than a beautiful object moving through water. It is a place where the noise of the world can finally fall away—or, if the design gets it wrong, follow you on board. That is why Project NEXO caught my attention. Van der Valk Shipyard and Dutch studio Phathom are not presenting wellness as a spa menu. They are asking whether the architecture of a yacht can make you feel differently.

NEXO—short for New Experience X-Over, or Crossover—is a concept, not a production yacht. The distinction matters. Van der Valk describes it as a point of departure for a fully custom build, a proposition for owners who want their boat shaped around the way they live. Its central idea is compelling: space should adapt to people and to the moment, rather than asking people to adapt to a fixed plan.

Wellbeing as architecture

The best part of this idea is that it changes the conversation. In luxury design, wellbeing can quickly become a checklist: gym, spa, sauna, cold plunge. NEXO’s more interesting claim is that the feeling begins earlier—in the proportions of a room, in the way daylight reaches it, in whether the boundary between inside and outside can soften when the sea is calm.

Van der Valk and Phathom describe a main-deck salon that opens aft and to both sides, extending into terraces. The sofa can turn outward; a sliding bar can move with the social setting. Upstairs, the lounge may be configured as indoor-outdoor dining, a gym or a spa. Those are practical choices, but the larger design ambition is emotional: a yacht that can shift from gathering place to quiet retreat without feeling like a collection of separate rooms.

A beach club that meets the water

At the stern, the announced design includes a dual-level beach club, a central hot tub and side terraces that open toward the sea. A concealed garage is intended to keep the tender and water toys out of sight; a hydraulic swim platform brings the deck down to the waterline. Forward, a liftable platform is conceived for different uses—from sunbathing to an open-air cinema or a fitness zone.

These are still concept features, and the final specification would depend on a future owner. But they reveal where the thinking is headed: less emphasis on adding more things, more attention to how a space changes the rhythm of a day. Even the material palette—stone, linen, leather and planting—is described in tactile terms, with the stated intention of keeping attention on water, light and the experience of being at sea.

A yacht that gives the day room to breathe

I like the restraint of the ambition. NEXO does not need to claim that it will reinvent yachting. It simply proposes that a 30-metre yacht can be judged by something beyond its length, speed or list of amenities: does it help its owner feel more present? Does it make room for both company and solitude? Does it let the sea become part of the interior, rather than scenery framed by a window?

That is a more human brief for yacht design—and a harder one to solve well. If Project NEXO remains a concept today, it is still a useful provocation: the future yacht may not be the one that takes us furthest from shore, but the one that makes us feel most connected to it.

Project NEXO is a custom concept by Van der Valk Shipyard, developed with Dutch design studio Phathom. It is not a production model.
