The Chevrolet Blazer EV.R NASCAR prototype is the boldest electric racing concept to emerge from any major American manufacturer. Unveiled ahead of the 2025 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, the Blazer EV.R combines 1,300 hp from three six-phase electric motors with a 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery, all wrapped in a wide-body silhouette drawn directly from the production Blazer EV SS. It is a proof of concept that electric motorsport performance and real-world EV development can feed each other.

 

How does the Blazer EV.R generate 1,300 hp?

Three six-phase electric motors work in concert to deliver the Blazer EV.R's combined output, with each motor capable of spinning to 15,000 rpm. Power reaches all four wheels through a programmable all-wheel-drive system that engineers can tune in real time for different track conditions. The 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery pack sits low in the NASCAR Next Gen chassis to minimise the centre of gravity, mirroring the packaging philosophy of the road-going Blazer EV platform. Goodyear Racing Eagle tyres complete the mechanical package, providing the grip needed to translate that power into lap time.

What is the Blazer EV.R built on?

The prototype sits on NASCAR's Next Gen chassis, the same aluminium spaceframe underpinning the current Cup Series cars, adapted to accept the electric drivetrain. Chevrolet engineers worked directly with NASCAR's technical department to ensure every component met the sanctioning body's safety and dimensional specifications. The aerodynamic body is closely derived from the Blazer EV SS in production form, with a wide stance, a prominent rear wing generating significant downforce, and an extremely low roofline that improves high-speed stability at Daytona's 31-degree banked turns.

Regenerative braking and the lessons for production EVs

One of the most significant engineering learnings from the Blazer EV.R programme involves regenerative braking. As 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Champion Justin Allgaier described during test sessions at Carolina Motorsports Park, regenerative braking fundamentally changes how a driver trails into a corner: the deceleration profile is steeper and more linear than friction brakes, and it simultaneously feeds energy back to the battery. These insights will inform calibration strategies in future Chevrolet production EVs, making the racetrack a genuine technology incubator rather than a branding exercise.
