FERRARI RETURNS TO LE MANS WITH 499LE HYPERCAR
The Ferrari 499P Le Mans hypercar marks one of motorsport's most anticipated returns: after five decades away from the top class at Le Mans, Scuderia Ferrari re-entered the arena with a purpose-built hybrid prototype that immediately rewrote history. At the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 499P took outright victory, Ferrari's first overall win at the Circuit de la Sarthe since 1965.
What Is the Ferrari 499P?
The 499P is Ferrari's entry into the Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) category, the top tier of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Its name pays direct tribute to the legendary Ferrari sports prototypes of the 1960s and 70s, the 250P and 330P, which dominated endurance racing in that era. According to the official Ferrari hypercar page, the 499P is engineered with the same ethos: total performance, beautifully expressed.

Powertrain: Twin-Turbo V6 Meets Hybrid AWD
The 499P runs a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine derived from the architecture used in the Ferrari 296 GTB road car. The V6 adopts a 120-degree bank angle with the turbos mounted within the 'Hot V' configuration, a layout that optimises thermal efficiency and packaging on the carbon-fibre monocoque chassis.
At the front axle, an electric motor delivers up to 200 kW (272 hp) above 190 km/h, as defined by LMH regulations. The two systems combine to produce a regulation-capped output of 500 kW (680 hp) total, channelled through an all-wheel-drive system. Energy is stored in a bespoke 900-volt battery that is recharged via regenerative braking, so every braking zone feeds the next acceleration phase. Minimum race weight is 1,030 kg.

The Return to Le Mans: Why It Matters
Ferrari last competed at the top level of Le Mans in 1973. The 50-year gap made its return in 2023 one of the most talked-about moments in recent motorsport history. As Motorsport.com reported at the 499P's unveiling, Ferrari chose not to rush the project: the car was developed over several years with Scuderia Ferrari's factory team leading the programme.
The 499P's debut WEC season began with the Sebring 1000 Miles in March 2023, building race mileage ahead of the 24 Hours in June. When the chequered flag fell at Le Mans, Ferrari took first place outright, a result that instantly cemented the 499P in the history books alongside the 250P and 330P it was named to honour.
