HOW THE MCMURTRY SPÉIRLING SHATTERED A 21-YEAR-OLD TOP GEAR RECORD
The McMurtry Speirling Top Gear record of 55.9 seconds, set on April 11, 2025 at Dunsfold Aerodrome, is the fastest lap ever recorded at the iconic circuit. It beat the previous record, held by Fernando Alonso's 2004 Renault R24 Formula 1 car at 59.0 seconds, by 3.1 seconds. The record belongs to the McMurtry Speirling PURE VP1, an all-electric single-seater that uses a Downforce-on-Demand fan system to generate 2,000 kg of downforce at any speed, including a standstill. What is the McMurtry Speirling and how does its fan system work?
The McMurtry Speirling PURE VP1 is a single-seat carbon-bodied electric hypercar built by the Bristol-based McMurtry Automotive. Its defining technology is the Downforce-on-Demand fan system: two large electric fans mounted in the underbody actively suck air out from beneath the car and eject it upward, creating a low-pressure zone between the floor and the road surface. This ground-effect suction acts independently of road speed, meaning the Speirling generates maximum downforce the moment it begins to move, rather than requiring high velocity to develop aerodynamic load as a conventional wing does. The result is 2,000 kg of downforce available at 0 mph and maintained consistently at all speeds up to the car's 185 mph top speed. Combined with 1,000 hp from the electric drivetrain, this gives a 0 to 60 mph time of 1.5 seconds.
Why was the old record so hard to break?
Fernando Alonso's 59.0-second lap in the 2004 Renault R24 stood as the Top Gear Test Track record for 21 years because Formula 1 cars of that era represented the pinnacle of tyre and aerodynamic development. The R24 competed at the front of the F1 grid that season and was optimised for exactly the kind of short, mixed-radius track that Dunsfold represents. Previous challengers including the Bugatti Chiron, Koenigsegg Agera RS and various track-day specials fell short. The Speirling's fan-generated downforce breaks the fundamental constraint that limited every prior challenger: the need for high speed to develop meaningful aerodynamic grip.

What this means for electric hypercar performance
The Speirling's lap time does not just set a record: it reframes what EV performance means. For years, critics argued that battery-electric vehicles lack the sustained power delivery needed for rapid repeated laps, pointing to thermal management challenges and weight penalties. The Speirling addressed weight through a compact single-seat carbon structure that keeps overall mass low, and its fan system removes the speed dependency from aerodynamic performance. The car demonstrated it could sustain record pace across multiple successive laps during testing, ruling out a one-lap outlier argument. The McMurtry benchmark is now the reference against which every future hypercar, electric or otherwise, will be judged at Dunsfold.
