Jaguar Type 01: Presence Comes First
Jaguar’s new electric GT brings its creative reset into a car intended for production. What interests me first is the shape—and whether that shape gives us a reason to care.
I always look at the silhouette first. Before the power figure, before the screen, before anyone explains the brand strategy. If the shape holds my attention, I want to understand the machine behind it.
The Jaguar Type 01 does that.

Looking at the launch images, my eye keeps returning to the relationship between the long bonnet, the low roof and the weight of the rear. There is something almost architectural about it. Large surfaces, deliberate lines, a sense that the whole object was composed before the details were added.
Unveiled on 7 October, the Type 01 is Jaguar’s new electric four-door grand tourer, bringing the direction introduced by the Type 00 concept towards production. That transition is where a design becomes particularly interesting to me. The idea has to accommodate people, doors, luggage, manufacturing and all the other demands that a show car can leave unresolved. Jaguar’s official launch presentation
With this car, I want to spend some time looking at what survived that process.
The proportions are the starting point. An electric platform gives a designer choices about how a car should occupy space. Here, Jaguar has chosen to give considerable importance to the bonnet and to the distance between the front wheel and the cabin. On the images, that creates a clear sense of direction. The car appears to have a front, a destination, an intention.
I like that.

I am also drawn to the rear. The broad shoulders and the glassless tailgate give it a substantial, slightly severe character. It is a decision that affects the entire object, right down to the way the driver sees behind the car through a camera display. This is the kind of detail I look for: a visual choice with consequences.
The cabin continues that thinking. A central spine runs through the interior, defining separate spaces for four occupants. The pale surfaces and brass-inspired finishes make it feel closer, in the pictures, to a piece of contemporary furniture than to the usual performance-car cockpit. What interests me is the atmosphere that arrangement might create. A grand tourer should make you want to spend time inside it. The seating position, the materials you touch and the way the cabin frames the road will matter long after the novelty of the display has passed.
There is plenty of performance promised. Jaguar’s French page announces up to 1,030 horsepower and an estimated range of up to 720 kilometres with the optional 21-inch wheels. Pricing starts at €166,100 in France. Jaguar identifies the performance and range figures as manufacturer estimates, with final specifications still subject to change. At that level, my expectations go well beyond acceleration. I want the controls to feel considered. I want the ride to have composure. I want the materials to reward a second look. Most of all, I want the experience on the road to make sense of the object I am seeing now.

I have not driven the Type 01. The images can tell me about its composition; they cannot tell me how it settles into a fast corner, how it feels after three hours, or whether its size becomes something you enjoy or something you manage.
Those questions remain open.
For now, I find the design worth taking seriously. I can imagine walking around it, looking again at the rear quarter, then stepping back to understand the whole shape. That curiosity is a good beginning.
At Transmission, that is often where an object earns its place: it makes me want to look more closely, then ask how it works.
The Type 01 has my attention. I want to see whether the road gives it the same presence.
