Kia’s Nadal Tribute Is an EV4 GT Made of Clay
What if a car could carry the ground beneath a champion’s feet? Kia’s answer is a full-size clay sculpture of its EV4 GT, made with clay gathered from the courts where Rafael Nadal won his 63 singles titles on the surface. It is a tribute to a tennis career, but also an unusual design object: a familiar electric performance car rendered in the very material that shaped its subject’s legend.

Presented to Nadal at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, the sculpture takes the EV4 GT’s proportions and gives them a second meaning. The clay is not a decorative colour choice or a surface treatment. According to the Kia France press material shared with TRANSMISSION, it comes from the courts on which Nadal built his record of 63 singles titles on clay. The result connects the object to a place and a history: the car’s body becomes a vessel for material shaped by years of competition.
A car made from the surface that made a champion
That idea gives the project its force. A conventional tribute might place a name, number or trophy on a car. Kia instead turns the court itself into part of the car’s material story. Clay is fragile, granular and easily disturbed; automotive design usually seeks the opposite qualities—precision, continuity and a controlled finish. Bringing the two together makes the EV4 GT feel less like a product display and more like a sculptural portrait.

The car shown here is a sculpture, not a driveable EV4 GT prototype. That distinction matters: the project is not announcing a new production specification or a special edition for sale. Its ambition is symbolic. The recognisable EV4 GT silhouette provides the canvas, while the clay supplies the link to Nadal’s achievements.
More than twenty years in motion
The gesture also draws on a partnership that began in 2004, when Nadal became Kia Spain’s brand ambassador; Kia says he has served as its global ambassador since 2006. More than two decades later, the relationship is still being told through movement—this time through a static object that asks us to look closely rather than watch a ball fly across the court. Kia’s account of its partnership with Nadal traces that long shared history.

There is a pleasing tension in choosing the EV4 GT for the tribute. It is a contemporary electric performance model, while the clay carries the memory of a game played through footwork, timing and touch. Kia’s GT range brings its sporting character to electric cars; this one-off piece takes the idea of performance away from acceleration figures and toward endurance, repetition and the marks left by effort. When the material tells the story
The most effective brand tributes do not simply add a logo to someone else’s achievement. They find a form that makes the relationship legible. Here, the material does that work. Clay is both the court and the keepsake; the car is both an EV4 GT and a sculptural body carrying a piece of Nadal’s sporting landscape.

It will never turn a wheel. It does not need to. As a one-off object, it makes a thoughtful point about what a car can represent when the design is only part of the story. This EV4 GT carries no one to the next match; it brings the court, the career and the long partnership into one frame.
