LEO Coupe: Carlos Salaff Is Designing the Impossible
There are designers who make beautiful objects. There are engineers who solve difficult problems. Then there are the rare few who can take a dream most people leave in science fiction and give it a real shape, a real proportion and a reason to exist.
LEO Flight’s Coupe is one of those projects. At its centre is my brilliant friend Carlos Salaff.
Carlos has always had a rare eye. He knows that design is not decoration applied at the end of engineering. It is the intelligence that makes a machine desirable, legible and human. With the LEO Coupe, he is taking that discipline somewhere extraordinary: off the road and into the air.

A Flying Car That Refuses the Easy Clichés
For decades, the flying car has been caught between science fiction, marketing renderings and impossible deadlines. The LEO Coupe takes another route: a personal, two-seat, battery-electric aircraft whose form begins with a question that matters — how can private flight feel as intuitive, compact and emotionally compelling as a car?
LEO Flight is developing a clustered electric-jet architecture, integrating more than 100 small shrouded lift jets into the vehicle alongside aerodynamic surfaces and fly-by-wire control. The company presents its approach as a layered safety philosophy, including redundant lift, emergency-glide capability, a ballistic recovery parachute, automated stabilisation and flotation provisions. Those ambitions must of course be judged through testing, certification and production, but the direction is right: personal aviation will only become personal when it becomes understandable and reassuring.
Designing the Experience of Freedom
The Coupe looks like no other eVTOL because Carlos is not designing it as aviation equipment. He is designing an experience of freedom. LEO Flight’s published targets — two passengers, a 510 lb payload, 200 mph cruise and 250 miles of range per charge including reserves — are projected figures, not certified production specifications. Still, they make the ambition clear: a personal machine intended to live close to its owner, not in a remote airport hangar.
That is the most compelling part of the LEO vision. The Coupe does not try to make us all airline passengers in the sky. It asks whether the next great luxury object might be a machine that takes off from the ground beneath us and opens a completely new relationship with distance.
Carlos Salaff: A Designer With a Point of View
I have enormous affection and respect for Carlos because he is the real thing. He has never chased the easy path or the fashionable answer. He has spent his career thinking deeply about movement, proportion, emotion and craft. Before co-founding LEO Flight and becoming its Design Director, he worked at Mazda Design Americas and later built his own world through SALAFF Automotive.
The best flying machines of the future will not be born from technology alone. They will be born when technology meets taste. Carlos has that taste: the ability to make something advanced without making it cold, and futuristic without making it generic. In the Coupe, you can see his belief that a machine should have a soul before it has a specification sheet.
Good Luck on the Road — Or in the Air
At TheArsenale, we are interested in machines that change the way we feel about movement. We believe a great object can make technology emotional, and make emotion useful.
That is why I want to give a big, heartfelt salute to Carlos and the entire LEO Flight team. Carlos, you have always had the courage to go where the industry is afraid to go. The Coupe is a bold answer to one of mobility’s oldest dreams, and it carries your character in every line: ambitious, elegant, uncompromising and a little rebellious.
I wish you all the luck in the world on the road — or, more appropriately, in the air. Keep drawing the impossible, keep building it, and keep reminding us that the future is made by people who refuse to accept that the horizon is the limit.
