MASERATI MC20’S AI DRIVER REACHES UNPRECEDENTED SPEEDS ON HISTORIC RUNWAY

The Maserati MC20 autonomous speed record of 197.7 mph (318 km/h) was set on March 3, 2025, at the Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center, the same runway used by NASA Space Shuttles. The achievement came from the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) team working with Politecnico di Milano's AIDA project, and it surpassed the previous absolute record for an AI-driven car by nearly 5 mph. No human sat in the cockpit: the record belongs entirely to software.

 

What is the Indy Autonomous Challenge and the AIDA project?

The Indy Autonomous Challenge is a series of high-speed autonomous racing competitions designed to accelerate AI driving software beyond the constraints of public-road testing. Politecnico di Milano's AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Driving Autonomous) programme, specifically the PoliMOVE-MSU team, developed the AI driver software that guided the MC20 to its record. Scientific Director Professor Sergio Matteo Savaresi led the project, emphasising that testing at extreme speeds forces the algorithm into edge-case scenarios that reveal weaknesses invisible at lower velocities. The IAC team had already set the previous record of 192.8 mph at the same location in 2022 using a dedicated AV-21 racecar; using a production-derived supercar raises the stakes significantly.

How was the Maserati MC20 modified for autonomous racing?

The MC20 Coupe was extensively re-engineered to accept the autonomous drivetrain. Actuators replaced the steering column, brake pedal and throttle inputs, giving the AI software direct physical control of the car. A suite of sensors including LIDAR, radar and high-speed cameras feeds data to the onboard computer, which processes inputs and makes control decisions in milliseconds. The production MC20's 630 hp twin-turbocharged V6 remained largely unchanged, since the challenge was not extracting power but controlling it at the limits of adhesion at near-200-mph speeds on a 3-mile straight. The mission was backed by Maserati and Italy's MOST (National Center for Sustainable Mobility).

Why does an autonomous speed record matter for road cars?

The data gathered during the record run feeds directly into the development of next-generation autonomous driving systems. High-speed instability, aerodynamic buffeting, tyre temperature management and limit-of-grip control are all encountered at 197 mph in forms that cannot be replicated at lower speeds. Insights on AI decision-making latency and sensor fusion accuracy at extreme velocities will be used to make Level 4 autonomous systems safer at the much lower speeds they will encounter in urban and highway environments. This is the same logic that underpins Formula 1 as a technology testbed: the conditions are extreme by design.
