PORSCHE MISSION S — A NEW KING ABOVE THE 911?
By Patrice Meignan
I love Porsche. I always have. But I also believe that even the greatest automotive brands need to surprise us. They need to take risks, challenge their own rules and occasionally create something completely unreasonable.
And that is exactly why the announcement of the Porsche Mission S makes me smile. Finally, Porsche is talking about a supercar above the 911 again.
Not another SUV. Not another special edition with a different stitching pattern. A proper, mid-engined super sports car. Something that could carry the extraordinary bloodline of the 959, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder into a new era. And frankly, it's about time.
The 911 is a legend. But Porsche needs more.
The 911 is one of the greatest sports cars ever created. Its evolution is almost miraculous. Porsche has preserved its identity for more than sixty years while continuously improving its performance. But the 911 cannot be everything.
The Carrera GT was outrageous. The 918 Spyder was a technological masterpiece. Both proved that Porsche could create machines that belong in a different universe. The Mission S could be the next chapter.
A new direction for Porsche
Porsche has introduced its strategy, Sportwagenschmiede '35, with an ambition to build greater exclusivity, stronger brand desirability and more extraordinary products. I think this is exactly the right direction. Luxury is not about producing more. It is about creating more desire.
October 15. The date to watch.
Porsche is keeping the important details secret. The company is exploring a mid-engined super sports car platform and Mission S will offer a first glimpse. But the final powertrain, performance figures, price and production plans have not been confirmed.
Personally, I hope Porsche gives us something radical. Something beautiful, uncompromising and perhaps a little crazy. A car that doesn't simply compete with Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren, but reminds the world what Porsche can do when its engineers and designers are given the freedom to dream.
Because the world doesn't need another ordinary supercar. It needs another extraordinary Porsche.
I can't wait for October 15.
