RIDING INTO THE FUTURE: GT-AIR 3 SMART’S AUGMENTED REALITY HELMET REVOLUTION

RIDING INTO THE FUTURE: GT-AIR 3 SMART’S AUGMENTED REALITY HELMET REVOLUTION

The Shoei GT-Air 3 Smart is the world's first production motorcycle augmented reality helmet, built with EyeLights to embed a nano-OLED head-up display straight into the visor. It projects speed, navigation, call alerts and radar warnings about three meters ahead of your line of sight, so essential riding data stays in view without ever looking down. Paired with a universal intercom and voice control, it turns a certified touring helmet into a fully connected riding cockpit.

What makes the GT-Air 3 Smart an augmented reality helmet?

At its core, this AR helmet integrates a Full HD nano-OLED head-up display developed by EyeLights. The projection floats roughly three meters in front of the rider and shows speed, turn-by-turn navigation, call notifications, radar alerts and a compact map overlay. A 3,000-nit output keeps the information readable in bright daylight, and EyeLights states the system can cut reaction time by more than 32 percent compared with glancing at an external phone or screen. Every electronic component is permanently installed in the shell, so there are no bolt-on modules to fit. Full details are on the official EyeLights GT-Air 3 Smart page.

Communication, comfort and safety

Beyond the visuals, the GT-Air 3 Smart adds a universal intercom system with unlimited range, a noise-cancelling microphone and support for voice assistants, creating a hands-free, connected riding experience that works across rival comms brands rather than locking you in. The shell uses Shoei's Advanced Integrated Matrix multi-layer composite for stability at low weight, carries both DOT and ECE 22.06 certification, and keeps the QSV-2 internal sun visor and CNS-1C outer visor riders already know. Battery life is rated at over ten hours, enough for a long day in the saddle. According to Shoei, the GT-Air 3 platform remains a benchmark touring helmet, and the Smart version layers AR on top without compromising protection.

Is the GT-Air 3 Smart worth it?

For riders who prioritise safety and seamless connectivity, the GT-Air 3 Smart is a compelling convergence of optics, audio and ergonomic helmet design. Expected to retail around 1,041 euros (roughly 1,199 dollars), it commands a premium over the standard GT-Air 3, but it sets a new baseline for how integrated AR and communication can be delivered in a mainstream, certified helmet. As smart helmet technology matures, this is the reference point every future AR helmet will be measured against.
