The Alef "Model A," a groundbreaking flying car, unveiled by California-based startup Alef Aeronautics was spotted once again at MWC tech show in Barcelona. The Model A, which debuted to large crowds intrigued by its futuristic, UFO-like design, represents a significant leap in transportation technology. Alef Aeronautics, founded by Jim Dukhovny and his team, has been developing this innovative vehicle since a concept sketch on a coffee shop napkin in 2015. The flying car boasts a blend of driving and flying capabilities, featuring eight electrically powered propellers and individual motors for each of its four tires. Its body, composed of lightweight carbon-fiber, can rotate 90 degrees post-takeoff to transition from vertical lift to forward flight, resembling a biplane.
As for availability and pricing, the Model A is keenly poised for an ambitious rollout, with Alef targeting a first production run by the end of 2025 if everything goes as planned. The company is aiming for mass production that could potentially make the cost of owning a Model A comparable to a compact car, although it is priced at $300,000 for early adopters. The vehicle’s design and manufacturing are currently focused on low-volume, custom orders hand-built in California, reflecting its initially high price tag. Alef has received a significant influx of interest with 2,800 pre-orders already placed, following its impressive showcase.
The Model A not only promises to revolutionize personal and commercial transportation but also has the potential to transform emergency services and urban commuting. Designed to comfortably fit into standard parking spaces and garages, the vehicle can travel 200 miles on the road and 110 miles in flight, providing a flexible solution for both city travel and longer rural commutes. Given its dual functionality and ease of use—claiming only 15 minutes required to learn its operation—the Model A could soon be a common sight in both the skies and on the streets of tomorrow's cities.
