The Land Aircraft Carrier consists of two distinct modules that function together as a single transportation system. The ground module is a six-wheel, three-axle electric vehicle with a 6x6 all-wheel-drive configuration and rear-wheel steering, giving it genuine off-road capability across varied terrain. The air module is a piloted eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft with a 270-degree panoramic two-person cockpit, capable of manual and autonomous flight modes. Xpeng AeroHT announced pre-orders and confirmed mass production plans for the vehicle in early 2024, with 100 units reserved at an intelligent transportation expo in Hangzhou.
The ground vehicle's extended-range electric powertrain is designed to recharge the eVTOL air module multiple times during a single ground journey. This eliminates one of the central practical objections to flying car concepts: the need for separate ground and air charging infrastructure. The two modules detach and reattach without special tooling.
The Two-Module Architecture: Ground and Air
Wang Tan, co-founder and vice president of Xpeng AeroHT, has described the system as the world's first split flying car designed for individual owners rather than commercial fleet operators. The distinction matters: existing eVTOL projects from companies like Joby Aviation, Archer, and Lilium are designed around shared mobility and urban air taxi networks. Xpeng AeroHT is targeting private ownership, positioning the Land Aircraft Carrier as a personal vehicle rather than a transit system component.
The air module uses an electric propulsion system built to meet single-point failure safety requirements, meaning the loss of any single motor or propeller does not result in loss of control. Autonomous flight modes are included as a standard feature, not an option, which is significant for buyers who may not hold a pilot's license or prefer to delegate flight management to the vehicle's onboard systems.
The ground module's six-wheel configuration also provides a stable launch and recovery platform for the air module, removing the need for a dedicated runway or landing pad. This is what makes the Land Aircraft Carrier genuinely dual-use: the ground vehicle is a capable off-road transport in its own right, not merely a trailer for the flying component.
Certification, Production, and Timeline
In March 2024, Xpeng AeroHT's modular flying car design received type certificate application acceptance from the Civil Aviation Administration of Central and Southern China (CAAC), a prerequisite for commercial operations in China. By November 2024, the two-passenger eVTOL air module had completed its first public piloted flight at the Guangzhou International Auto Show. The company reports 3,000 intent orders and is building a dedicated production facility in Guangzhou capable of producing 10,000 vehicles annually. First deliveries are now targeted for 2026.
The price has been announced as below 300,000 USD, which positions the Land Aircraft Carrier within the range of high-end luxury vehicles rather than the nine-figure territory of earlier personal aircraft projects. Xpeng AeroHT's parent company, Xpeng (XPEV), is a listed Chinese EV manufacturer with existing production infrastructure, which gives the delivery timeline considerably more credibility than most flying car announcements.
