TOYOTA UNVEILS FT-ME, A STYLISH AND SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO URBAN TRANSPORT
Toyota has unveiled the Toyota FT-Me, a fully electric micromobility concept designed specifically for European urban environments. At under 2.5 metres in length, it occupies half a standard parking space or one third of a space in perpendicular bays, and its solar roof panel adds 20 to 30 km of daily range in city use, removing the need for plug-in charging for most users. The FT-Me is not simply a small car: it is Toyota's proposal for what personal urban transport should look like as cities evolve toward lower emissions and denser living.
What Is the Toyota FT-Me Concept?
The FT-Me stands for Future Toyota Micro Electric. It targets a broad user base: teenagers with entry-level licences, young professionals, and established city drivers who want to downsize without sacrificing comfort or technology. The bi-tone black and white exterior, described by Toyota as jet-helmet-inspired, communicates safety and compactness simultaneously. Connectivity features include keyless entry and advanced digital integration throughout the cabin, designed around a two-seat layout with sufficient space for practical daily use.
Solar Roof and a 90 Percent Reduction in Carbon Footprint
The FT-Me's solar roof is not decorative. It uses leading-edge photovoltaic technology to charge the main battery directly, providing enough daily top-up for most urban driving patterns without requiring a charge point. Toyota targets a 90 percent reduction in carbon footprint compared to current city cars, achieved through a combination of recyclable materials, highly efficient electric propulsion that consumes three times less energy per kilometre than large battery EVs, and the solar input. The vehicle also incorporates hand-command driving controls adapted for wheelchair users without requiring aftermarket modifications, reflecting Toyota's stated Mobility for All philosophy.
Toyota FT-Me Price and When It Could Arrive
Toyota has not announced a production price or launch date for the FT-Me. The concept was unveiled to explore market appetite and regulatory readiness in Europe, where L-category vehicle legislation governs small four-wheel EVs of this type. Toyota Motor Europe's official announcement frames it as a concept that addresses specific urban transport challenges, while Electrek's analysis highlighted the solar roof technology as a genuine differentiator from competitors in the micro EV space. The FT-Me's price, when confirmed, is expected to position it as accessible to a wide range of city users rather than as a premium product.
