TRANSFORMING HIGH-SPEED RAIL: A LOOK AT THE FRANCE'S TGV VISIONARY INTERIORS
The new TGV Inoui interior design, created through a collaboration between French studio AREP and Japanese design firm Nendo, sets a new global benchmark for high-speed rail travel. Built around the concept of flow, drawing on the movement of rivers and the transition between water and sky, the redesigned InOui TGV is scheduled to enter service in 2026 and carries 20 percent more passengers than the current generation while consuming 20 percent less energy per seat.

The Flow Design Concept
AREP and Nendo built the entire interior language around a single idea: the train moves through landscape the way a river moves through terrain. Every material choice, color gradient, and form follows from that premise. Seating takes on rounded, pebble-like shapes. Colors deepen from ceiling to floor, mimicking the gradation from surface water to depth. In first class, Bordeaux tones create warmth, while second class uses cooler blues. Wallpaper documented the design process in detail, noting how the horizon line threading through all cabin elements gives passengers a consistent visual anchor across the train's nine carriages.
A strong horizontal band runs through every car at eye level, evoking the water surface and unifying the interior across classes. Natural light is treated as a design material: the gradient from darker floor tones to lighter ceiling hues maximizes the sense of openness and altitude, particularly on routes that traverse the French countryside at up to 320 km/h.


Bistro Car, Accessibility, and Seating Upgrades
The two-level bistro car is one of the most striking spaces on the new TGV. The lower level functions as a self-service restaurant, while the upper lounge accommodates 28 communal seats with flowing banquette shapes and layered textures. Yellow lamp accents, replacing the more muted lighting of previous generations, give the bistro car an energetic identity that contrasts with the calm of the passenger carriages.
First-class seats are 5 cm wider than in the previous generation, with full armrests and adjustable headrests. In second class, slimmer seat backs allow cushions to be 5 cm longer, improving leg room without reducing capacity. For the first time on a French TGV, wheelchair users can board independently via an integrated lifting platform and gap filler between the platform and carriage threshold. SNCF confirmed the full accessibility specification alongside the capacity and sustainability targets.

97% Recyclable, Built to Last Decades
Sustainability was a non-negotiable design parameter. Ninety-seven percent of the materials used across the TGV Inoui are recyclable, from upholstery to structural components. The nine-car train can carry up to 740 passengers at maximum configuration while meeting SNCF's low-carbon transport commitments. The goal was a design that would remain relevant and maintainable for the decades these trains will serve the network, not one tied to a single aesthetic moment.
The TGV Inoui represents the kind of long-horizon design investment that very few transport operators are willing to make, and it positions France's high-speed rail network as a genuine rival to aviation for medium-distance travel. The combination of comfort, capacity, and environmental credentials is a compelling case for choosing train over plane between Paris and Lyon, Marseille, or Bordeaux.
