Interesting Engineering confirmed the full specification at launch, and New Atlas reviewed the R1's positioning against competing platforms from Boston Dynamics and Tesla's Optimus program.

The Race to Democratize Robotics

The R1's launch coincided with China's largest AI forum, a deliberate statement about where Unitree believes the robotics industry is heading. Tesla's Optimus is projected to fall below $20,000 only when annual production reaches one million units. Unitree is already below $6,000 today. That gap represents a significant competitive advantage for applications in household assistance, small business automation, and research environments where budget constraints have historically excluded humanoid platforms.

The hot-swappable battery delivers roughly one hour of mixed activity, a limitation the company acknowledges but frames as a first-generation constraint that will improve rapidly as the technology matures. The 122 cm height and 25 kg weight keep the R1 manageable in domestic environments without sacrificing the articulation needed for useful real-world tasks.
