Morgan Motor Company has launched its first electric vehicle development program with the Morgan XP-1, an experimental three-wheel prototype built on the Super 3 monocoque chassis to define what an electric Morgan should feel, sound, and drive like before any production decisions are made. The XP-1 is not a show car: it is a working engineering tool that will accumulate real testing data over 18 to 24 months before Morgan builds its first production EV.

 

What Is the Morgan XP-1?

The Morgan XP-1 is an experimental electric prototype, announced in December 2023, representing the first time Morgan Motor Company has developed an in-house powertrain of any kind, whether combustion or electric. The battery, motor, and inverter combination was designed and integrated entirely by Morgan's own engineering team rather than sourced from a third-party supplier. According to Morgan's official announcement, the prototype's purpose is to hone driving characterisation, test powertrain configurations, and establish the in-house EV competence Morgan will need for all future electric models.

Powertrain and Performance Specifications

The XP-1 uses a 33 kWh battery positioned under the hood and an electric motor mounted in the transmission tunnel, driving the rear wheel. Output stands at 134 hp with a claimed range of approximately 150 miles. Critically, a 33% reduction in drag coefficient compared to the standard Super 3 was achieved through aerodynamic development supported by a full vehicle simulation toolchain Morgan built alongside the prototype itself. This toolchain allows engineers to model different powertrain scenarios, predict range, and select compatible components before any physical changes are made to the test car.

What Morgan Is Testing and Why

The XP-1 testing program covers four key areas: driving feel, powertrain performance, in-house EV capability building, and feature exploration through a bespoke interior UI that evolves with driver and engineer feedback. Morgan Chief Technical Officer Matt Hole has been explicit that any electric Morgan must retain the fundamental character of the combustion models, including their lightness, tactility, and directness. The XP-1 is the instrument through which Morgan discovers whether that character can survive electrification and, if not, what must change in the design to achieve it. As New Atlas reported, the prototype also represents a significant training exercise for Morgan's workforce as the company prepares for EV production.

What the XP-1 Means for Future Morgan Electric Cars

The XP-1 will not enter production. Its role is to produce the insights that shape production models still to be announced. Morgan has said the prototype will make public appearances and that the company intends to keep its community informed as the electric program evolves. For a brand whose identity has always been built on lightness, handcraft, and driving pleasure, electrification presents both a genuine challenge and an opportunity to demonstrate that those values survive the transition. The XP-1 is the first answer to that challenge.
