1956 PORSCHE 550 SPYDER - A RARE FIND

1956 PORSCHE 550 SPYDER - A RARE FIND - TheArsenale

This 1956 Porsche 550 Spyder is one of the most remarkable barn finds in recent Porsche history, a genuine race car discovered in a Swiss barn after sitting untouched for around three decades. Raced in period by drivers including Rita Rampinelli, Heinz Schiller and the legendary Jo Siffert, it survives as one of only 90 550 Spyders Porsche ever built.

What is the story behind this 1956 Porsche 550 Spyder?

Used in competition by a number of racing drivers, including Rita Rampinelli, Heinz Schiller and Jo Siffert, this rare 1956 Porsche 550 Spyder was discovered in a barn in Switzerland after sitting there for three decades. According to Hagerty, chassis 550-0079 was first entered by Rampinelli in the Saint-Ursanne-Les Rangiers hillclimb in June 1956 before passing through several Swiss racing hands.

How was the Spyder modified over the years?

It was upgraded at some point to help it stay competitive, receiving an alloy Porsche RS60 body and a new factory engine in place of its original four-cam flat-four. These period modifications were a common way to keep a privateer race car at the front of the grid, and they form part of the car's documented competition story.

Why is the 550 Spyder so valuable?

Although it undoubtedly shows signs of age, it was, after all, discovered in a barn, its distinguished history makes it an excellent candidate for a thorough restoration. Porsche produced just 90 550 Spyders, making each one extraordinarily valuable. As Gooding & Company noted ahead of its London sale, examples of this caliber are estimated well into the millions. This is one of the greatest 550 Spyders to surface in years.
