AIM EV SPORT 01 - A THRILLING VISION OF ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE
The AIM EV Sport 01 is an electric sports car concept designed by Shiro Nakamura, the former design chief of Nissan, in collaboration with AIM Corporation, a Japanese automotive engineering consultancy. Unveiled at the Japanese Auto Council in April 2023, the concept draws its design language from the great sports cars of the 1960s, particularly European grand tourers, while pushing the technical brief firmly into the present with a 600-hp dual-motor drivetrain and a full carbon-fiber body.
Shiro Nakamura: the designer behind the AIM EV Sport 01
Nakamura spent decades shaping Nissan's design identity, and his influence on vehicles including the GT-R, 370Z, and Murano defined a generation of Japanese performance design. The AIM EV Sport 01 is his answer to a question he had been asking about modern electric vehicles: why do so many of them look aggressive and visually cluttered? His concept takes the opposite approach, prioritizing clean surfaces, rounded forms, and what he calls sophisticated dynamism over blunt visual force.
Design: carbon clamshells, butterfly doors, and DB4 proportions
The AIM EV Sport 01 is 4 meters long and weighs approximately 1,500 kg, with weight kept low through the use of carbon fiber body panels organized into single-piece motorsport-inspired front and rear clamshells. The front face echoes the rounded headlamp treatment of the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. Butterfly doors open together with sections of the glass roof, blurring the boundary between canopy and door in a way that reads as both theatrical and structurally considered.
The profile is defined by a dropping character line and a stretched, coupe silhouette that feels more 1965 than 2023. Inside, two Alcantara-upholstered bucket seats are mounted directly on the chassis, paired with a leather-wrapped dashboard and a digital instrument cluster. The interior is deliberately minimal: two people, no unnecessary surfaces, nowhere for the eye to rest except the road ahead.
Performance: 600 hp, all-wheel drive, 300 km range
The powertrain is a dual-motor setup delivering 600 hp to all four wheels, with a battery sized for approximately 300 km of range. The rear-wheel-drive-inspired layout enabled the clean body design by keeping the nose clear of heavy mechanical intrusion. Fast-charging capability reduces downtime, and the long-range configuration makes the AIM EV Sport 01 a credible grand tourer rather than a pure track concept.
From concept to possible limited production
Following its debut, the AIM EV Sport 01 drove up the Goodwood Festival of Speed hill, demonstrating that the concept is a running, functioning vehicle rather than a static show piece. The response at Goodwood was strong enough that AIM began studying a limited production series, though no confirmed production timeline has been announced.
Nakamura's concept is significant not only for what it achieves technically, but for the argument it makes about electric vehicle design: that speed and silence do not require aggression, and that the finest sports cars have always derived their appeal from proportion and restraint as much as from raw output.
