What Is the Alef Model A?
The Alef Model A is classified as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV) on the ground, limited to 25 mph (40 km/h) on selected streets, which is how it earns its road-legal status without requiring full automotive certification. In the air, however, the picture changes entirely: eight electric motors power vertical lift fans concealed within the grilled carbon-fibre bodywork, and the cabin rotates 90 degrees on a gimbal system so occupants always remain level regardless of the aircraft's orientation.

How the Gimballed Cabin Works
The most distinctive engineering feature of the Alef Model A is its gimballed rotating cabin. When the vehicle transitions from ground to air, the body of the car tilts to generate horizontal thrust, while the passenger cabin counter-rotates on its gimbal to stay upright. This mechanism allows the Model A to avoid the twin-fuselage or tilt-rotor designs used by most other VTOL concepts, keeping the vehicle's footprint compact enough to use a standard garage.
The eight vertical-lift fans are integrated into the body panels rather than protruding as external rotors, which reduces ground clearance requirements and gives the Model A the appearance of a conventional, if unusually styled, road car when driving.
Range, Performance and Price
The Model A is powered by an 85 kWh battery pack, delivering a driving range of approximately 322 km and a flight range of around 177 km. Top aerial speed reaches 177 km/h, while road speed is capped at 40 km/h to comply with LSV regulations. Seating is for one or two passengers. Alef Aeronautics has also indicated that a hydrogen powertrain option may be offered as a premium add-on for buyers who need extended range.
The Model A is priced from $299,999, with customer deliveries targeted for 2026. Pre-orders are already open, and Alef reports significant deposit interest from early adopters.
