APTERA’S SOLAR-POWERED EV HITS MAJOR MILESTONE WITH ROUTE 66 TEST
Aptera solar-powered EV completed its first major real-world road test in early 2025, covering more than 300 miles along Route 66 from Flagstaff, Arizona, to California's Imperial Valley. For a vehicle that has been in development for nearly two decades and which promises to generate its own energy directly from sunlight, the journey was a credible public demonstration of what production-ready solar mobility can actually deliver.
The Route 66 Test: What Happened
Aptera co-CEO Steve Fambro drove the company's production-intent vehicle along the iconic highway in conditions that included partial cloud cover. The solar array, which produces up to 700 watts under optimal conditions, recorded peaks of 545 watts even on an overcast day, harvesting 2.4 kWh of solar energy across the journey, equivalent to approximately 20 miles of driving powered entirely by the sun, without any grid charging. Total energy consumption across the test route came in at 122 Wh per mile, which Aptera claims is twice as efficient as the most efficient production EV currently on sale.
The footage from the run showed a vehicle that is clearly not fully finished: exposed interior components and a stripped cabin confirm that active development continues. However, the core systems, including the drivetrain, solar harvesting, and aerodynamic body, performed as intended under genuine road conditions.

Solar-First: How Aptera's Energy System Works
The Aptera integrates 700 watts of solar panels across the roof and hood, producing enough energy to offer up to 40 miles of daily range without any external charging under optimal sunlight. For most urban commuters, that is sufficient to cover day-to-day needs without ever connecting to a charger.
For longer journeys, the Launch Edition will be available with a 400-mile battery pack. A 1,000-mile configuration is in development for buyers who want maximum range security. The carbon fibre composite body achieves a drag coefficient of 0.13, which is extraordinary even by the standards of purpose-built efficiency vehicles, and is the structural reason the solar array is viable at all: a less aerodynamic body would consume the solar gain before it could translate to meaningful range.

Performance, Price, and Production Plans
The Aptera two-seater reaches 60 mph in approximately four seconds and tops out at 101 mph, driven by a 150 kW drivetrain. The Launch Edition is priced at $40,000. The company has reported more than 48,000 reservations and has stated its intention to begin limited production by the end of 2025, scaling to 20,000 units annually by 2027.
The three-wheeler configuration (two front wheels, one rear) enables the vehicle to be classified differently from conventional cars in some jurisdictions, which has regulatory implications for licensing and insurance in certain US states. This is a practical consideration for prospective buyers alongside the compelling efficiency numbers.
