The Aptera solar EV is one of the most audacious vehicles to emerge from the sustainable mobility movement: a three-wheeled, two-seat electric car developed in partnership with Pininfarina that can travel up to 40 miles every day on solar power alone, with a total range of up to 400 miles per charge and an optional 1,000-mile battery pack. Unveiled in its production-intent form at CES 2025, it claims one of the lowest aerodynamic drag coefficients of any passenger car ever built.

 

Pininfarina Partnership and the Wind Tunnel in Turin

Aptera Motors brought in Pininfarina, the legendary Italian design and engineering firm responsible for some of Ferrari and Maserati's most iconic bodies, to refine the Aptera's teardrop silhouette. Access to Pininfarina's historic wind tunnel in Turin allowed the team to push the drag coefficient close to 0.13, a figure dramatically lower than a typical passenger car (around 0.30) and even below the most aerodynamic production EVs on sale today. As New Atlas reported, the result is a body structure built from carbon-fiber sheet molding compound, lightweight and stiff enough to protect occupants while minimising rolling resistance.

Solar Array: 700 Watts, Four Panels, Zero Charging Stops

The CES 2025 debut marked the first public showcase of Aptera's complete solar array: four panels positioned on the hood, dashboard area, roof, and rear hatch, generating up to 700 watts under optimal sunlight. For drivers with average daily commutes, that means the car can recharge itself overnight in a parking spot under open sky, without a plug. The system complements a base 400-mile battery or an extended-range pack that pushes the figure to 1,000 miles per charge. Top speed is quoted at 101 mph, with a 0-60 mph time of roughly four seconds in all-wheel-drive configuration. As Top Gear noted, this makes Aptera's solar vehicle far more practical than any solar-assisted car that came before it.

Production Timeline and Road Ahead

Initial sales are targeted for late 2026, with full-scale production planned for 2028, pending further funding. By May 2026, Aptera had completed five validation prototypes for major component testing. The company originally launched in 2006, closed in 2011, and reopened in 2020 through a crowdfunding campaign that attracted significant grassroots investor support. The production-intent model shown at CES represents the most complete version of the vehicle to date, with the company now focused on securing the capital to carry it through regulatory crash testing and into customer hands.
