The Audi e-tron GT concept, unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2018, was the clearest preview yet of where Audi's electric performance ambitions were heading: a four-door grand touring coupe built on Porsche's J1 platform, sharing its 800-volt charging architecture and quad-motor all-wheel-drive layout with the Taycan, and packaging all of it in a dramatically low silhouette that felt nothing like the SUV-shaped EVs Audi had previously committed to.

 

Why the Audi e-tron GT Concept Mattered

In 2018, almost every major automaker had announced an electric future, but very few had shown what a genuine electric sports car from a mainstream premium brand would actually look like. The e-tron GT concept answered that question. It was not a tall crossover or a family sedan. It was a sloping, wide-haunched four-seat gran turismo with near-supercar proportions, four-wheel steering, active air flaps, and a roof that sloped sharply enough to demand a frameless door glass.

The concept's 90 kWh battery sat between the axles for a low centre of gravity and near-perfect weight distribution. Two electric motors, one per axle, developed 590 hp in the concept's overboost mode and pushed the car to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. The 800-volt charging system, shared with the Porsche Taycan, allowed a 0 to 80% charge in approximately 20 minutes on a suitable DC fast charger.

From Concept to Production: The RS e-tron GT

The production Audi e-tron GT went on sale in Europe in May 2021, staying remarkably close to the concept's proportions and design language. The standard e-tron GT quattro produces 350 kW (469 hp) sustained, boosting to 390 kW (523 hp) in overboost, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h. Range on the production car reaches 238 miles (383 km) EPA-estimated on its 84 kWh net battery.

The RS e-tron GT is the performance variant, producing 600 PS (592 hp) with 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and a governed top speed of 250 km/h. Both models use 800-volt architecture for ultra-rapid charging.

Sustainable Interior Materials

Audi committed from the concept stage to eco-friendly interior materials: synthetic leather for seat surfaces, microfiber headlining, and floor carpets manufactured from recycled fishing nets. The cabin framing around these materials is thoroughly digital, with a driver-focused cockpit layout that keeps analogue controls minimal and primary information on high-resolution displays.
