BMW MOTORRAD VISION CE: A NEW ERA FOR EMISSION-FREE, TWO-WHEEL FREEDOM?
At IAA Mobility 2025, BMW Motorrad unveiled a concept that challenges the most fundamental assumption in motorcycling: that riders must wear protective gear. The BMW Motorrad Vision CE introduces a structural cage, open steel tube composite frame that, working in combination with an integrated seat belt, protects the rider's legs, hips, and shoulders during an accident without requiring a helmet or dedicated riding clothing. It is BMW Motorrad's most radical vision of urban two-wheeled mobility yet, combining zero-emission electric drive with a design that asks whether the city commute needs to feel like suiting up for motorsport.
What Is the BMW Motorrad Vision CE?
The Vision CE is a fully electric concept scooter with self-balancing capability when stationary, removing one of the main pain points of urban two-wheelers at low speed and in traffic. Its aesthetic is deliberately calm: a flat matt white and black silhouette accented with neon red highlights, with coated aluminum framing and an open structure that reads as architecture as much as vehicle design. The "CE" designation links the concept directly to BMW Motorrad's existing production electric lineup, the CE 04 urban scooter and the compact CE 02, both of which have already redefined what an electric two-wheeler looks like in the premium segment.
The Cage: Safety Without Sacrifice
The protective cage on the Vision CE is inspired by buggy and off-road motorcycle frames, adapted for urban speeds and typical accident scenarios. By distributing impact energy through the structure rather than onto the rider's body, BMW Motorrad argues that a well-designed cage can compensate for the absence of leathers and a helmet in city environments where speed rarely exceeds 50 km/h. Self-balancing technology adds another layer of confidence, automatically stabilizing the vehicle when stopped, which eliminates the reflex bracing that leads to wrist and shoulder injuries in low-speed tip-overs.
BMW Motorrad's Electric Heritage and What Comes Next
BMW Motorrad's electric journey began with the C evolution scooter in 2014, followed by the production CE 04 and CE 02, which proved there was demand for premium electric urban two-wheelers. The Vision CE extends that trajectory toward a future where the vehicle itself takes on some of the safety burden currently carried by the rider's clothing. Whether regulators will follow BMW's vision and create legal frameworks for cage-equipped two-wheelers that remove helmet requirements remains to be seen. As a concept, the Vision CE demonstrates convincingly that the next era of urban mobility does not have to look or feel like anything that came before it.
