Design Lineage: BMW 507, Z8 and the Shark-Nose Heritage
BMW Design Chief Adrian van Hooydonk describes the Skytop as referencing the brand's most celebrated roadster heritage, particularly the BMW 507 of the 1950s and the Z8 of the early 2000s. The result is a body language that speaks both classic and contemporary: a pronounced shark-nose front with illuminated kidney grilles, BMW's slimmest production headlights, an arrow-shaped bonnet, and sculpted athletic flanks with precision character lines. The soft-top retractable roof is leather-trimmed. The finished paint, called "Floating Sundown Silver," is applied by hand with chrome shadow effects, making each unit subtly unique.
625 hp V8, xDrive and 3.3-Second Performance
Under the sculpted bonnet, the Skytop carries BMW's most powerful production V8: a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged unit producing 625 hp. The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission ensures rapid, precise gear changes, while xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive provides traction and stability across the full performance envelope. The 0 to 100 km/h figure of 3.3 seconds is not the point of this car, but it confirms that the Skytop is a driver's machine as much as a collector's artefact. Alloy wheels are custom-specified, and aerodynamic features including the grille geometry and bonnet vents are all functional, not merely decorative.
