What Is the "Heart of Joy" and Why Does It Matter?
The "Heart of Joy" is BMW's centralised control unit combining drivetrain management, energy recuperation, braking, and driving dynamics into a single powerful system, developed entirely in-house. It processes driving data ten times faster than previous generation systems, making adjustments in millisecond intervals across acceleration, cornering, and energy recovery cycles. During prototype testing at the Spartanburg facility, the system demonstrated 18,000 Nm of combined torque from the electric drivetrain while delivering efficiency gains of up to 25% through intelligent recuperation under braking.
Dynamic Performance Control: Precision at Every Corner
Coupled to the "Heart of Joy" is BMW's Dynamic Performance Control software, which coordinates acceleration, braking, cornering forces, and energy recuperation into a seamless, intuitive experience. The system reduces reliance on conventional friction brakes: in everyday driving conditions, recuperation alone handles braking demands for up to 98% of deceleration events. The result is a measurably smoother corner entry, a more stable line, and reduced driver fatigue, qualities BMW has refined over decades on the racetrack and now brings to electric mobility.
Four Supercomputing Zones: The Integrated Neue Klasse Brain
The "Heart of Joy" is just one of four purpose-built supercomputing units in the Neue Klasse ecosystem. The other three manage autonomous driving functions, infotainment and connectivity, and climate control respectively. Together, these four systems create a fully integrated, intelligent vehicle architecture that BMW describes as a new benchmark in precision and driving pleasure. Series production of the first Neue Klasse model is set to begin at Plant Debrecen, Hungary, marking a significant milestone for European electric vehicle manufacturing.
