CELEBRATING MASERATI'S LEGACY WITH THE MC20 LEGGENDA AND ICONA
The Maserati MC20 Leggenda and Icona are two limited-edition special series, each produced in just 20 units, that Maserati unveiled in 2024 to mark the 20th anniversary of the brand's return to motorsport with the MC12 in 2004. Both cars are built on the same MC20 chassis with the twin-turbocharged V6 Nettuno engine, but their liveries, colours, and interior detailing are designed as direct tributes to specific chapters of Maserati's racing history, making them as much collector artefacts as performance cars.
MC20 Leggenda: The Vitaphone Racing Tribute
The Leggenda draws its identity from the MC12 GT1 that competed under the Vitaphone Racing team colours. Its livery pairs Nero Essenza with Digital Mint Matte, a combination chosen to echo the award-winning racing car's visual signature. The Maserati Trident appears in yellow on both the exterior and interior, creating a thread of continuity between the competition car and this road-going homage. Inside, four-way lightweight monocoque racing seats are fitted alongside a Sonus Faber audio system, full carbon-fibre interior trim package, and an electronic limited-slip differential. A suspension lifter handles the practicalities of everyday driving without compromising the car's low stance.
MC20 Icona: The MC12 Stradale Reference
Where the Leggenda references the track car, the Icona reaches back to the MC12 Stradale, the road version of Maserati's Le Mans racer. Its two-tone Bianco Audace Matte and Blu Stradale livery is accented with Maserati Fuoriserie branding, chrome-plated wheels with a Trident-design hub in contrasting blue, and blue brake calipers. An auto-dimming mirror and carbon fibre engine cover complete the exterior. The interior specification mirrors the Leggenda, with the same racing seat construction, Sonus Faber system, and carbon-fibre trim, grounding both editions in the same performance framework. As Carscoops confirmed, the differences between the two editions are primarily aesthetic and heritage-related rather than mechanical, meaning buyers are choosing between two stories rather than two performance tiers.
The MC20 Platform and the Nettuno Engine
Both editions are built on the MC20's carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. The mid-mounted 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 produces 621 hp and uses a pre-chamber combustion system derived from Formula 1, enabling the engine to burn fuel more completely at high load. This is a Maserati-developed unit, not a sourced powertrain, a point the brand has emphasised since the MC20's launch in 2020 as evidence of its renewed engineering independence. Maserati's own account of the two special series frames both cars as a bridge between the brand's racing past and its announced all-electric future, with the brand targeting a fully electrified lineup by 2028.
