The Urtopia Fusion e-bike with ChatGPT is the world's first smart electric bicycle to integrate OpenAI's ChatGPT directly into the bike's hardware, enabling voice-activated conversations with the bike while riding. Co-designed by legendary industrial designer Hartmut Esslinger, the man behind Apple's Snow White design language, the Fusion combines carbon fibre construction, a mid-drive motor and AI assistance in a package that Esslinger himself calls "the iPhone among e-bikes."
Hartmut Esslinger and the Fusion's Design DNA
Hartmut Esslinger founded Frog Design and shaped the visual identity of Apple's earliest products in the 1980s. His involvement with Urtopia brings the same philosophy to cycling: intuitive hardware, clean lines, and technology that serves rather than distracts. The Fusion builds on Urtopia's Carbon 1/1s platform, sharing its full carbon fibre frame (under 20 kg total weight) and the visual confidence that comes from a machine designed with genuine care.
Full details of the Fusion's debut at EUROBIKE 2023 are covered by Engadget, and a technical breakdown is available from Designboom.

How ChatGPT Works on the Urtopia Fusion
Urtopia equipped the Fusion with an integrated microphone and speaker. ChatGPT runs as a voice assistant accessible while riding, allowing the cyclist to ask for directions, nearby restaurants, local landmarks, weather updates and general information without touching a phone. The system uses Urtopia's own voice recognition layer on top of the ChatGPT API, ensuring the interaction works reliably even at cycling speeds and in outdoor environments.
Beyond conversational AI, the Fusion records ride data continuously and syncs with Apple Health and Strava. The system can monitor heart rate biometrics and adjust pedal assist in real time to compensate for the rider's effort level, making it genuinely adaptive rather than simply informative.

Specifications and Variants
The Fusion's 95 Nm mid-drive motor delivers assistance up to 25 km/h, with a 540 Wh battery providing 120 km of range. A 360 Wh battery extender extends this to 200 km. The standard model uses a Shimano CUES derailleur; the premium CVT version uses an Enviolo stepless shifter for continuously variable gearing, ideal for urban terrain where constant gear changes slow momentum. A 100 mm air suspension fork absorbs road imperfections.
Security features include fingerprint unlock, a movement alarm, and built-in route tracking. Pricing starts at approximately 3,999 euros for the standard Fusion and 4,999 euros for the CVT variant.
