ELON MUSK UNVEILS THE INNOVATIVE CYBERCAB ROBOTAXI

The Tesla Cybercab robotaxi was unveiled on 10 October 2024 at Tesla's "We, Robot" event at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Fully autonomous, with no steering wheel and no pedals, the Cybercab is designed exclusively as a passenger-carrying self-driving vehicle for two. Priced under $30,000, it entered production at Gigafactory Texas in April 2026, making it one of the first purpose-built Level 4 autonomous vehicles to reach mass production anywhere in the world.

 

Design: Butterfly Doors, No Mirror, No Charge Port

The Cybercab's design makes an immediate statement about its purpose. Two butterfly-wing doors open automatically, with no external door handles. There is no rear window and no side view mirrors. No external charge port is visible on the production prototype, reflecting the inductive wireless charging system. The cargo area is accessed through a hatchback-style opening at the rear.

The two-passenger cabin is entirely driver-free: no steering wheel, no pedals, and no conventional driver's seat. The interior is configured around passenger comfort and the ride-sharing use case, with the assumption that occupants are always passengers rather than drivers. At the "We, Robot" event, 20 prototype Cybercabs autonomously gave rides to attendees around the studio lot at night.

Autonomy: Hardware 5 (AI5) and Level 4 Operation

The production Cybercab runs Tesla's Hardware 5 platform, internally called AI5. The system combines cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors for a 360-degree environmental view, with no LiDAR in the sensor suite, consistent with Tesla's camera-first FSD philosophy. The Cybercab is designed to operate at SAE Level 4 autonomy in designated geographic areas, meaning the vehicle handles all driving tasks within its operational design domain without any human intervention.

Tesla claims autonomous operation could be 10 to 20 times safer than human-driven vehicles and reduce per-mile operating costs to approximately $0.20. Efficiency is quoted at 5.5 miles per kWh. Battery capacity is planned at a minimum of 35 kWh, with a range target of at least 200 miles (320 km).

Wireless Inductive Charging

One of the Cybercab's most forward-looking features is its inductive charging system. Rather than requiring a physical plug connection, the Cybercab charges by positioning over an inductive pad. Tesla plans charging efficiency above 90 percent, comparable to wired AC charging for a vehicle in this size class. For a fully autonomous robotaxi that operates continuously without a human driver to manage charging, wireless inductive systems are the logical solution: the vehicle simply parks over a charging surface between trips without any manual intervention.

Production, Price, and Regulatory Path

Tesla began Cybercab production at Gigafactory Texas in April 2026. The target retail price is under $30,000, placing it in a segment that could make autonomous ride-sharing economically viable for operators and passengers at scale. Trial commercial operations have been targeting California and Texas as initial markets, subject to the regulatory approvals required from state and federal transport authorities for Level 4 autonomous vehicles operating without human supervision.

Electric and Autonomous Vehicles at TheArsenale
