The AZULIK EK organic electric car is a doorless, three-seat prototype built for the private roads of AZULIK Basin in Tulum, Mexico, and it may be the most architecturally audacious microcar ever put into motion. Unveiled on May 20, 2024, the EK was designed by AZULIK Mobility and manufactured by Roth Fablab using locally sourced regional materials, combining a curvaceous fiberglass body with a zapote wood steering wheel, thermoformed acrylic windshield, and handmade ceramic emblems.

 

What Is the AZULIK EK?

The EK sits at the intersection of organic architecture and electric mobility. AZULIK Mobility, part of the broader AZULIK Real Estate group known for its biomimetic structures in Tulum, applied the same philosophy to a vehicle: no straight lines, no industrial anonymity, and no doors. The car seats three people with two passengers stretching their legs forward on either side of a waterproof nautical fabric tabletop, and a driver positioned behind the zapote wood wheel. Every surface was shaped using advanced digital and computational processes, yet assembled by hand with the involvement of local artisans from the Yucatan region.

Specifications and Performance

The EK prototype is powered by a 2,200W electric motor, suited to the low-speed private roads of AZULIK Basin. Maximum speed is 40 km/h, and the single-charge range reaches up to 100 kilometers, making it practical for leisurely commutes within the property. A full charge takes eight to ten hours. The car includes wireless phone charging, a reverse camera display, and a digital tachometer, demonstrating that modern convenience was not abandoned in the pursuit of organic aesthetics.

Materials: Natural, Local, and Purposeful

Roth Fablab's approach to the EK reflects a commitment to material honesty. The body is formed from fiberglass with polyurethane foam casting and finished with automotive paint. Structural elements use thermoformed acrylic alongside exterior-grade textiles. Wood components, including the spider-web steering wheel, are machined and carved from tropical zapote, a dense hardwood native to the region, then sealed with natural sealers. The result is a vehicle that smells, feels, and looks unlike anything produced in a conventional automotive factory.
