HEART X1 IS PIONEERING THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC AVIATION

Heart Aerospace X1 is the largest fully electric aircraft ever built and the key demonstrator behind the Swedish startup's plan to decarbonize regional air travel. Announced for its maiden experimental flight in 2025 at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York, the X1 carries a 32-metre wingspan and serves as the test platform for Heart's commercial programme: the ES-30, a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner. The ES-30 targets an all-electric zero-emissions range of 200 kilometres and an extended hybrid range of 400 kilometres, covering the majority of short-haul regional routes that currently depend entirely on turboprop or small jet aircraft.

 

What Is the Heart X1 and Why Does It Matter?

The Heart X1 is a full-scale experimental demonstrator, not a prototype of the final ES-30 aircraft. Its purpose is to validate the electric propulsion system, battery integration, and flight dynamics before Heart Aerospace advances to the X2 demonstrator, which is scheduled for hybrid-electric flights in 2026. The X1 uses Heart's proprietary Independent Hybrid propulsion architecture, which allows the aircraft to operate in fully electric mode for shorter routes and switch to hybrid operation to extend range when needed. The Federal Aviation Administration selected Heart Aerospace for a $4.1 million FAST (Fuelling Aviation's Sustainable Transition) programme grant to develop the hybrid propulsion management system.

Plattsburgh: A Strategic Test Site for Sustainable Aviation

The choice of Plattsburgh International Airport is deliberate. Located in the Champlain Valley of upstate New York, the airport combines existing aerospace infrastructure with low air traffic density, which is critical for experimental flight programmes that require predictable airspace management. Clinton County officials have actively partnered with Heart Aerospace, positioning the region as a manufacturing and testing hub for next-generation transportation technologies. Anders Forslund, co-founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace, has emphasized that reviving regional air routes is central to the company's mission: many short-haul connections between smaller cities have been abandoned by commercial airlines due to economics, and electric regional aircraft could make them viable again, with zero direct emissions.

Everything the X1 is testing feeds into the ES-30, the 30-seat aircraft Heart intends to bring to market for regional operators. At 200 km all-electric range, the ES-30 covers routes that represent a significant portion of current regional aviation without any fuel. The hybrid extension to 400 km catches the rest. For airlines, the economics are compelling: electric propulsion dramatically reduces per-seat fuel and maintenance costs compared to turboprops, and the growing carbon pricing environment makes the sustainability case increasingly compelling for operators booking aircraft for the next two decades.
