What is the Kronos submarine?
From an APV to a superyacht, Highland Systems has a history of producing remarkable vehicles, and even if most look like fantasy, at least one prototype has been built for most of them. That brings us to the armored submarine Kronos. It is about 30 feet long, was inspired by a ray, has 11 seats including the driver, and can dive deep below the surface. As Highland Systems describes it, the Kronos is a hybrid craft engineered to operate both on and under the water.
How fast and how deep can the Kronos go?
With a combined duration of up to 54 hours, the Kronos pairs a diesel generator with a 1,200 hp electric jet motor to reach speeds of up to 50 mph over the water and 30 mph below it. According to New Atlas, it can run a 36-hour all-electric mission before the diesel range extender is even needed, with a working depth in the hundreds of feet.
What features does the Kronos have?
The Kronos includes upward-folding wings for trailering plus amenities like adaptive lighting, an automatic life support system and air conditioning. It weighs around 22,000 lbs, so a strong transporter is essential. The design also includes provisions for torpedo mounting, which are presumably reserved exclusively for military use.
