The MK_1 is a five-seat all-electric SUV with a utilitarian, brick-shaped body style optimised for maximum capability rather than aerodynamic efficiency. According to Top Gear's review of the MK_1, it positions itself directly against the Land Rover Defender as an all-electric alternative for buyers who need a working vehicle, not just a capable-looking one.
MK_1 Specs: Power, Range and Off-Road Numbers
The MK_1 is available in two output configurations. The Utility model pairs a 61.2 kWh battery with a 220 kW (295 hp) motor for a range of 141 miles, while the Range variant steps up to an 82.4 kWh battery and the same motor for 186 miles. A higher-output version produces 376 hp (280 kW) with 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds.
Crucially, the MK_1 uses axial flux motors rather than conventional radial flux motors. Axial flux designs are roughly twice as light for the same power output, a significant advantage in a vehicle where weight savings translate directly into payload capacity. Munro claims a payload of 2,200 pounds and a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. Charging covers 15 to 80% in 36 minutes via DC fast charge, with a full charge in around three and a half hours on AC.
Off-Road Capability: How Extreme Is It?
The off-road geometry figures are exceptional even by specialist 4x4 standards. The MK_1 has an approach angle of 84 degrees, a departure angle of 51 degrees, and a 148-degree breakover angle. Ground clearance stands at 480 mm, and the vehicle can wade through water up to 800 mm deep. As Electrek reported at the MK_1's debut, these figures make it competitive with purpose-built expedition vehicles, not merely with lifestyle SUVs.
Munro planned to build 50 MK_1s at its East Kilbride facility in 2023 before transitioning to a larger production site in central Scotland, with a target of 2,500 vehicles per year by 2027. Pricing starts from £49,995 (excluding VAT) for the base Utility, rising to around £60,000 for the Range specification.
