Nikolai Budarin's Omega Speedmaster
The Nikolai Budarin Omega Speedmaster is one of the most documented space-flown wristwatches ever offered at auction: a stainless steel Speedmaster Professional with serial number 4826777, worn by Russian cosmonaut Nikolai Budarin during three Extravehicular Activities on the joint US-Russia mission STS-71/TM-21 in 1995. In total, this watch spent 14 hours in the vacuum of open space.
The Mission and the Watch
STS-71 was the first Space Shuttle docking with the Russian Mir Space Station, marking a historic moment of post-Cold War cooperation in orbit. Nikolai Budarin flew as a mission specialist and conducted three spacewalks during the mission. Throughout those Extravehicular Activities, he wore this particular Speedmaster Professional on his wrist, outside the station, in the vacuum of space.
The watch itself carries the classic Moonwatch configuration: stainless steel case, black tachymeter bezel, black dial with three chronograph sub-dials, and the original Omega black leather band. Its caliber 1861 hand-wound movement is unchanged from the watches NASA certified for astronaut use in the 1960s.

Provenance: Signed on the Mir Space Station
What sets this Speedmaster apart from other space-associated examples is the letter of provenance. Mr. Budarin signed and stamped the provenance document while still aboard the Mir Space Station, making it one of the few artifacts in existence whose authentication paperwork was itself produced in orbit. The watch was auctioned by RR Auction, which documented the piece extensively. For deeper context on space-flown Speedmasters, Worn and Wound published a thorough account of the watch's history and mission.
A tiny fraction of all Omega Speedmasters produced have ever left Earth's atmosphere. Of those, fewer still carry provenance signed in orbit. The Budarin Speedmaster belongs to a category of objects that are not merely collectibles but physical records of a specific moment in human exploration.
