VIDDE ALFA SNOWMOBILE x PININFARINA - A CLOSER LOOK
The Vidde Alfa electric snowmobile, designed in collaboration with Pininfarina, is one of the most significant pieces of electric mobility engineering to emerge from the outdoor sports world. Developed by Swedish startup Vidde Mobility and styled by the Italian design house, the Alfa produces 175 hp and 400 Nm of torque from its 130 kW electric motor, operates in temperatures as low as -39 degrees Celsius, and retails from 26,200 euros. It claims an 85 per cent reduction in lifecycle emissions compared to a conventional petrol snowmobile.
Why Vidde built the Alfa
Christian Lystrup founded Vidde Mobility in 2021 around a single data point: over ten million terrain vehicles worldwide emit approximately 30 megatons of CO2 per year, a figure that exceeds Sweden's entire national carbon output. The Alfa is Vidde's answer, targeting the leisure and professional snowmobile market with a machine that is zero-emission at the point of use and built from recycled and recyclable materials to minimise production impact. According to Dezeen's feature on the Vidde Alfa, the project positions the snowmobile as the cleanest vehicle of its type ever brought to production.
Pininfarina's design approach
Pininfarina's senior vice president of Experience Design, Xavier Blanc Baudriller, led the styling team. Rather than adapting an existing snowmobile silhouette, the team began with a clean sheet, removing every unnecessary detail to arrive at a low-slung, angular form that communicates purpose and restraint. Bold orange grab handles contrast against industrial black treads and runners. The result is a machine that looks as though it has been engineered by a tech company and styled by a design studio: because it was. Kristine Lium, Vidde's head of Design and Sustainability, framed this as intentional: the machine must be sustainable not just in operation but across its entire lifecycle, which includes its desirability over time. Specifications and cold-weather engineering
The Alfa's 130 kW motor delivers 175 hp and 400 Nm of torque with a continuous towing capacity of 270 kg. Range is approximately 100 km and charging takes 3.5 hours. The battery heating system is the engineering detail that makes Arctic operation viable: it maintains cell performance at temperatures as low as -39 degrees Celsius, a requirement for any machine sold seriously into Nordic and Alpine markets. Noise, another major critique of traditional snowmobiles in protected natural areas, is dramatically reduced. Pre-series production began in early 2024, with preorders open from 18 February 2024 at 26,200 euros.
