The Renault Filante Record 2025 is a single-seater electric demonstration car built to prove that aerodynamic efficiency and lightweight engineering can push electric vehicle range far beyond what production cars currently achieve. At 5.12 meters long, 1.19 meters tall, and just 1,000 kilograms, the Filante combines an 87 kWh battery (the same capacity as the Scenic E-Tech Electric) with extreme aerodynamics to deliver a verified consumption of 7.8 kWh per 100 km at highway speeds, a figure that would translate to an extraordinary real-world range in any production vehicle. The car pays direct homage to Renault's historic record-breaking legacy, specifically the 40 CV des Records from 1925 and the famous Etoile Filante from the 1950s, while using 21st-century materials and drive-by-wire technology to redefine what electric efficiency can look like.

 

The Record: 1,008 km on a Single 87 kWh Charge

On 18 December 2025, at the UTAC test track in Morocco, the Filante Record 2025 covered 1,008 km in under 10 hours at an average speed of 102 km/h, finishing with 11% battery remaining. That remaining capacity would have allowed an additional 120 km at the same pace. The verified average consumption of 7.8 kWh per 100 km is roughly twice the efficiency of the best production electric cars at comparable speeds. As Renault's official media release confirms, the run establishes a new efficiency benchmark for electric vehicles at sustained highway speeds, demonstrating what a combination of aerodynamics, lightweight construction, and cell-to-pack battery architecture can achieve.

Aerodynamics Inspired by Aviation

The Filante's monolithic flowing body is designed around one principle: total drag reduction. Aerodynamic fairings cover the rear wheels, high-performance wheel flanges eliminate turbulence at speed, and the elongated body keeps airflow attached from nose to tail. Michelin developed bespoke low-rolling-resistance tyres specifically for the project. The design team drew inspiration from aeronautics: the cockpit layout mirrors that of a light aircraft, and the canopy profile mimics a racing plane's fuselage. Wind tunnel testing in spring 2025 led to a significant redesign of the body's rear section, underlining how seriously Renault treated the aerodynamic problem as the primary variable to solve.

Materials and Technology: Scalmalloy, 3D Printing, and Steer-by-Wire

The Filante Record 2025 is a technology laboratory on wheels. Its construction uses Scalmalloy (a high-strength aluminium-magnesium-scandium alloy developed for aerospace), alongside 3D-printed structural components. The suspension and steering use steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire systems, eliminating mechanical linkages and saving mass while providing precise calibration of steering feel at every speed. The driver's seat is constructed from lightweight stretched canvas rather than conventional foam and leather, and the instrumentation is integrated directly into the steering wheel to reduce cockpit mass further. According to InsideEVs' analysis of the record run, the combination of these elements produced an average of nearly 8 miles per kWh at sustained highway pace, a figure no production EV currently approaches.

Heritage Connection: From Etoile Filante to 2025

Renault has a long history of land speed and efficiency record attempts. The original Etoile Filante of 1956 set a speed record of 308.85 km/h on the Bonneville Salt Flats using a gas turbine engine. The 2025 Filante Record deliberately references this heritage in name and silhouette, connecting Renault's present-day electric ambitions to a lineage of engineering ambition that stretches back a century. For Renault, the Filante is both a proof of concept and a brand statement: that the company's commitment to electrification is not limited to comfortable family cars but extends to the outer edges of what is technically possible.
