SAVILE - THE ROWING BOAT THAT IS A VISION

SAVILE - THE ROWING BOAT THAT IS A VISION - TheArsenale

The Savile rowing boat is a custom-built carbon fiber sculling boat that is far more than a vessel: it is a vision of what happens when master craftspeople treat sport as art. Born from a collaboration between designer Serge Rusak of Rusak Creative Designworks and rower-turned-manufacturer Benoit Loicq, Savile is a rowing boat conceived as a bespoke, tailor-made object, as personal and precise as a suit from Savile Row in London.

The Story Behind Savile

The name Savile is a deliberate nod to Savile Row, the London street synonymous with the finest bespoke tailoring in the world. Just as a tailor constructs a suit to the exact measurements and preferences of a single client, Savile builds each rowing boat to the owner's chosen finishes and specifications. No two Savile boats are identical.

The project is a genuinely original idea: a high-performance rowing shell that is also a designed object, crafted entirely by hand. It was born from the conviction that the rowing experience deserves the same level of sensory refinement that fine watchmaking or bespoke coachbuilding brings to their respective fields.

Materials and Construction

The Savile rowing boat is built from high-strength hybrid woven carbon fiber tissues bonded with bio-based resin. The result is a shell that is both robust and exceptionally light, weighing approximately 20 kg at a total length of 5.75 m. Sustainable materials were central to the design brief: Savile is engineered to leave no trace behind, performing at the highest level while respecting the environment in which it operates.

The carbon fiber shell is lightweight enough to respond instantly to the rower's input, yet stable enough to allow complete focus on technique rather than balance.

Hydrodynamic Design and the Swallow-Tail Aft

The hull geometry of the Savile boat is the result of careful hydrodynamic engineering. Its aft section features a distinctive swallow-tail design that delivers exceptional stability on the water, allowing the rower to focus entirely on the stroke rather than correcting course. The combination of a narrow, performance-oriented hull with this stabilizing aft geometry achieves an ideal balance of speed, control and comfort.

This is a rowing experience unlike anything offered by a standard production shell. Each stroke engages the full potential of the hull, rewarding good technique and amplifying the pleasure of the sport.

Recognition and Awards

The Savile boat has received international recognition for its design excellence, including a prestigious Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. This recognition places Savile alongside the most celebrated designed objects of its generation, not simply the finest rowing boats.

A Bespoke Object for the Discerning Rower

Each Savile boat is finished to the client's personal specifications, from the color scheme and surface treatments to the hardware and rigging details. It is a rowing boat for those who understand that the finest equipment elevates the experience as much as the training.
