The Porsche 911 Dakar is a factory-built lifted 911 designed for mixed on- and off-road driving, inspired directly by the car that René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne drove to victory in the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally. Based on the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, it features a raised ride height, a reinforced suspension with dedicated off-road modes, all-terrain tyres, and a rear-wheel steering system. Despite its rally-derived configuration, it is a fully compliant road car, making it one of the most versatile 911s ever offered.
Porsche offered the 911 Dakar in a limited run of 2,500 units globally. The Sonderwunsch programme, Porsche's bespoke customisation service for one-of-a-kind special editions, was chosen to mark the model's final chapter with a creation that could stand as its definitive expression.
Luca Trazzi's Design: Lampedusa Blue and Signal Yellow
Designer Luca Trazzi, known for his decades of work with leading automotive brands, created a livery that draws on the 1984 Dakar Rally winning car's colour palette while adding a personal touch rooted in his Mediterranean origins. The exterior combines Signal yellow and Gentian blue metallic, echoing the Rallye Design Package's original colour split, with a third colour, Lampedusa blue, named after the Italian island close to Trazzi's roots, used as a painted accent line and as the colour for the headlight rings and rim edges.
The alloy wheel spokes are painted in Signal yellow, while the rim edges receive the hand-painted Lampedusa blue treatment: an entirely manual process that underlines the Sonderwunsch programme's commitment to artisanal quality. The stainless steel protective elements on the front, rear, and sills are finished in black, providing contrast and emphasising the car's rally-ready architecture.
Inside, the Final Dakar's interior continues the colour dialogue with yellow stitching and trim strips across the dashboard, centre console, and door panels. The headrests of the Sports Seats Plus carry embroidered "911 Dakar" lettering in Speedyellow thread. A Speedyellow leather insert distinguishes the gear selector. When the doors are opened, LED projectors cast the Sonderwunsch logo onto the ground beneath the car, a signature feature of Porsche's bespoke programme.
The Legacy of the Porsche 911 Dakar
The 911 Dakar, in all 2,500 of its production units, represented Porsche's answer to a question the market had been asking for years: could a 911, fundamentally a rear-engined sports car, also function as a genuine all-terrain vehicle?
