THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURER’S ELECTRIC DELOREAN REVAMP

THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURER’S ELECTRIC DELOREAN REVAMP - TheArsenale

The DeLorean All Roader electric concept by designer Jeremy Dodd reimagines the iconic stainless-steel sports car as a capable off-road EV: a 4x4-driven adventure vehicle with roof rails, expanded storage and retractable rear-wheel carrier, blending the unmistakable DeLorean silhouette with the kind of rugged functionality demanded by overlanders and explorers.

Who Is Jeremy Dodd and Why the DeLorean?

Jeremy Dodd is an independent designer who has built a reputation for concept work that takes culturally loaded automotive icons and repositions them for contemporary use. The DeLorean is a natural subject: its gull-wing doors, brushed stainless-steel body and association with the Back to the Future film franchise give it an instantly recognisable identity that few other cars can match. Rather than designing a road-going EV in the mould of the DeLorean Alpha5 that the revived company was developing, Dodd took the concept in a completely different direction, asking what the DMC-12 would look like if it had been conceived as an all-terrain electric adventure vehicle from the outset.

Design Details: What the All Roader Changes

The All Roader keeps the fundamental proportions and characteristic gull-wing DNA of the original DeLorean while adding a raised ride height for off-road clearance, roof rails for expedition gear, increased underbody storage and a rear-wheel carrier for a full-size spare or additional equipment. LED headlights and sharply designed taillights update the lighting signature without abandoning the classic face. Because the DeLorean's engine sat at the rear, the front now functions entirely as a storage compartment, giving the concept more practical utility than a conventional EV layout would allow. The stance is wider and more planted than the original, conveying capability rather than just style.

Battery Technology: The Case Against Fast Charging

One of the more interesting aspects of Dodd's concept thinking is his position on EV battery management. He argues that while rapid DC fast charging is marketed as a convenience feature, its primary beneficiary is the manufacturer rather than the owner: repeated exposure to high charging rates degrades lithium-ion chemistry over time, reducing the long-term usable capacity of the pack. Dodd designed the All Roader with slower, gentler charging as the default, alongside a bespoke battery management system that claims to extend lifespan by up to 50 percent compared with fast-charging equivalents.
