Vertical Aerospace VX-4 eVTOL has made aviation history by completing the world's first airport-to-airport flight by a full-scale, piloted, winged tilt-rotor electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft through public airspace. On July 16, 2025, chief test pilot Simon Davies flew the VX-4 prototype 17 miles (27 km) from Vertical Aerospace's Flight Test Centre at Cotswold Airport to RAF Fairford, carrying Civil Aviation Authority approval for the entire route. The flight reached 115 mph (185 km/h) and an altitude of 1,800 feet (550 m), before landing at the Royal International Air Tattoo, one of the world's largest military airshows.

 

What Is the Vertical Aerospace VX-4?

The VX-4 is a tilt-rotor eVTOL engineered for civilian and military roles alike. It offers two propulsion configurations: a fully electric variant with an estimated range of 100 miles (161 km), and a hybrid-electric variant with a range of up to 1,000 miles (1,600 km). Cruising speeds, low noise output, a minimal heat signature, and an optional autonomous flight mode give the aircraft a broad mission envelope spanning urban air mobility, defense, and special operations. During earlier trials, the aircraft validated its tilt-rotor transition, one of the most technically demanding maneuvers for any winged eVTOL.

Why Does This Airport-to-Airport Flight Matter?

Previous eVTOL demonstrations have taken place in closed airspace or over short distances. The VX-4's flight through live public airspace, cleared by the UK CAA, proves that an electric air taxi can integrate directly with existing airport operations and air traffic management systems. That is the critical step between prototype and commercial service. Vertical Aerospace has targeted 2028 for certification of the VX-4, and a second-generation hybrid-propulsion system is scheduled to begin flight testing in Q2 2026. As cities face worsening ground congestion, point-to-point urban air mobility is shifting from concept to calendar date.

The Broader eVTOL Revolution

The VX-4's milestone arrives as the wider advanced air mobility sector approaches commercialization. Across Europe, North America, and Asia, regulators and manufacturers are converging on standards that could make short electric flights as routine as rideshares within a decade. Vertical Aerospace's achievement adds hard evidence to what has long been a promise: quieter, cleaner city-to-city aviation is technically achievable today.
