VERTICAL AEROSPACE'S VX-4 MAKES HISTORIC AIRPORT-TO-AIRPORT EVTOL FLIGHT

Vertical Aerospace has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in sustainable aviation. The company’s VX-4 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) prototype became the first aircraft of its type to complete a flight between two airports through public airspace. During this historic demonstration, the VX-4 covered a distance of 17 miles (27 km), flying from Vertical Aerospace's Flight Test Centre at Cotswold Airport to RAF Fairford as part of the 2025 Royal International Air Tattoo event. The flight, piloted by Simon Davies, the company's Chief Test Pilot, highlights the real-world potential of this innovative aircraft and marks the next step toward eVTOLs integrating with civilian airport operations.

The VX-4 is a tilt-rotor eVTOL designed for both civilian and military applications. It combines advanced technology and environmental sustainability, with options for all-electric or hybrid-electric configurations. During its initial trials, the VX-4 reached speeds of up to 115 mph (185 km/h) and altitudes of 1,800 feet (550 m). With an estimated all-electric range of 100 miles (161 km) and a hybrid-electric range of up to 1,000 miles (1,600 km), the aircraft is built to serve a variety of roles, including urban air mobility, defense, and special missions. Added features such as low noise, low heat signatures, and optional autonomous flight capabilities further position the VX-4 as a strong candidate for the next generation of aviation innovation.

This achievement not only demonstrates the VX-4’s ability to operate within real-world airport systems but also brings Vertical Aerospace closer to its goal of commercial eVTOL deployment by 2028. The successful airport-to-airport flight was also a symbolic moment, as the VX-4 shared the airshow spotlight with some of the world’s most advanced military aircraft. As the industry shifts towards more sustainable and efficient aviation solutions, Vertical Aerospace’s accomplishment signals a clear step forward in redefining how people and goods move through the skies.
