Workhorse SureFly Goes Up in its First Manned Flight

Workhorse SureFly Goes Up in its First Manned Flight - TheArsenale

The Workhorse SureFly completed its first manned flight, marking a milestone moment for the hybrid-electric eVTOL category. Developed by Workhorse Group in Loveland, Ohio, the SureFly is a two-seat personal octocopter designed to carry up to 180 kg across a range of 112 km, using a hybrid diesel-electric powertrain that makes it one of the most capable personal air mobility vehicles developed to that point.

What Is the Workhorse SureFly?

The SureFly is a hybrid-electric multicopter built for personal point-to-point air travel. Its eight independent electric motors each drive their own rotor system, arranged in four pairs of coaxial counter-rotating propellers. The redundant multi-motor layout means the aircraft can continue to fly safely even if one motor fails, a critical safety requirement for certification and for building public confidence in passenger drone technology. A ballistic parachute serves as the final safety backup in an emergency.

Hybrid Powertrain: Diesel Generator and Battery Backup

Unlike most eVTOL concepts that rely solely on battery power, the SureFly uses a hybrid approach: a combustion engine acts as an onboard generator, continuously charging the batteries while the electric motors drive the rotors. A parallel battery pack provides a fully independent backup power source, meaning the aircraft maintains powered flight even if the combustion generator fails. This hybrid architecture gives the SureFly a meaningful range advantage over pure-battery eVTOL competitors, with a cited figure of 112 km on a single tank, at a top speed of around 113 km/h and a service ceiling of 1,200 metres.

First Manned Flight and FAA Certification

The SureFly was unveiled at the 2017 Paris Air Show before completing its first manned flight, a low-altitude hover just above the ground that validated the systems and control logic. The aircraft subsequently entered the FAA Type Certification process, an important regulatory milestone that distinguishes the SureFly from pure concept vehicles. Workhorse also exhibited the SureFly at CES and at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, and the programme attracted commercial interest from operators exploring electric air taxi operations in cities including Los Angeles.

Personal Air Mobility: Where eVTOL Is Heading

The SureFly represents an early but significant step in the shift toward personal air mobility, a category that now includes dozens of funded programmes worldwide. For those interested in what personal flight looks like today, the Air collection at TheArsenale brings together some of the most advanced personal aircraft and eVTOL vehicles available. The Ehang AAV autonomous passenger drone takes the passenger drone concept into autonomous territory, while the XPENG X2 eVTOL flying car bridges personal aviation and automotive design. The Atea hybrid-electric aircraft by Ascendance extends the hybrid powertrain philosophy to fixed-wing form.
