Ascendance Flight Technologies is a French aerospace startup redefining what eVTOL can mean beyond the city taxi use case. The Atea: Hybrid-Electric VTOL for Regional Mobility

Eight vertical lift fans are integrated into fixed wing ducts for takeoff and landing, while a rear pusher propeller handles efficient fixed-wing cruise. Sterna: The Proprietary Hybrid Propulsion System
Atea is powered by Sterna, Ascendance's in-house hybrid-electric propulsion system. Sterna combines a turbogenerator with battery packs in a modular architecture, providing two critical advantages: fuel flexibility (the turbogenerator can run on sustainable aviation fuel) and resilience (if one energy source degrades, the other maintains safe flight). This approach mirrors the logic used in hybrid powertrains for road vehicles, but applied to the demanding certification requirements of commercial aviation. The system's noise output is four times lower than a comparable helicopter, a benefit that matters enormously for vertiport operations in or near urban environments.

Development Timeline and Market Ambitions
Ascendance has reported over 2 billion euros in pre-orders for the Atea, reflecting substantial commercial confidence in the platform. Full-scale prototype flight testing was planned for 2025, with commercial entry into service targeted for 2027. The company is pursuing EASA certification and positioning Atea as the go-to aircraft for operators currently running helicopter taxi and medical evacuation services who need a transition to lower-cost, lower-emission operations.
