The 1970 Aston Martin Volante, specifically a DB6 MkII Volante, became Aston Martin's first classic car to receive a fully electric powertrain conversion, unveiled as the Heritage EV concept. As interest in electric vehicle conversions of classic cars keeps growing, Aston Martin wanted to lead the way, turning one of its most beautiful grand tourers into a zero emissions cruiser while preserving everything that makes it special.
What is the 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Volante EV?
This 1970 Aston Martin DB6 MkII Volante was originally hand crafted at Newport Pagnell and has now been reborn as the Heritage EV concept. Rather than scrapping the classic, Aston Martin fitted it with an electric powertrain so it can keep being driven even as future legislation threatens the use of older combustion cars in city centres.

Why is Aston Martin electrifying a classic?
When asked about the Heritage project, then Aston Martin president and CEO Andy Palmer said: "We are very aware of the environmental and social pressures that threaten to restrict the use of classic cars in the years to come. Our Second Century Plan not only encompasses our new and future models, but also protects our treasured heritage. I believe this not only makes Aston Martin unique, but a truly forward thinking leader in this field." The conversion is reversible, so owners can reinstate the original engine if they wish.

How does the conversion work?
Aston Martin says the technology for these conversions is based on key components also used to develop new models such as the Rapide E, a super limited all electric sports car. The system is built around a self contained cassette that sits on the original engine and gearbox mountings, keeping the work non destructive and fully reversible.

What about the Rapide E?
The Rapide E was set to feature an 800 volt, 65 kWh battery offering over 200 miles of range, with a sub 4 second 0 to 60 mph sprint and a top speed of 155 miles per hour. Only 155 examples were planned, with production slated for late 2019 and pricing still to be confirmed at the time. The lessons from that flagship fed directly into the Heritage EV conversions for cars like this 1970 Aston Martin Volante.
