What Is Cybertruck Wade Mode?

Wade Mode is accessed through the Cybertruck's Off-Road App and activates a coordinated set of vehicle responses designed to protect the drivetrain and battery during water crossings. According to Tesla's official Cybertruck Owner's Manual, the mode allows fording to approximately 32 inches (815 mm) of water depth, measured from the bottom of the tire, at slow speeds of 1 to 3 mph (2 to 5 km/h).

Once engaged, the system performs several actions simultaneously. The air suspension raises the vehicle to its maximum height, increasing ground clearance by up to four additional inches beyond the standard ride height. The high-voltage battery automatically pressurizes to prevent water and debris from reaching it. All critical electrical components, including the drive units, are sealed within watertight compartments, and hydrophobic coatings protect cameras and sensors. Wade Mode can be active for up to 30 minutes, and the mode should remain engaged until the vehicle is completely clear of the water.

How Wade Mode Reimagines Off-Road EV Capability

Traditional internal combustion vehicles are vulnerable in water crossings because water entering the intake or exhaust can cause catastrophic engine damage, a condition known as hydrolocking. Electric drivetrains face a different set of risks: water infiltration into battery cells or motor windings can cause immediate shorts or long-term degradation. Tesla's approach to both risks is sealing and pressure rather than avoidance.

The torque distribution system also recalibrates during Wade Mode, adjusting power delivery to maintain traction on uncertain, submerged surfaces. The Cybertruck's dual or tri-motor all-wheel-drive architecture gives the system fine-grained control over each axle, which is an advantage in conditions where grip is inconsistent.

Wade Mode is a prerequisite for engagement: drivers must ensure all doors and windows are fully closed and vehicle speed must be below 20 mph (32 km/h) before the mode can be selected. This deliberate gating prevents accidental activation at speeds where water pressure against the chassis would exceed design tolerances.

Real-World Testing and Limits

Early Cybertruck owners have put Wade Mode through extensive real-world trials, and documented results show that the system performs as specified within its rated depth, though exceedingly deep crossings or high-speed entry into water have caused damage in some cases. The 30-minute time limit and the low recommended speed are not suggestions; they define the engineering envelope within which the system was validated.
