The GAC Barchetta concept is an electric open-top roadster unveiled by Chinese state automaker GAC Group in late 2022, created to mark the opening of the company's new European R&D centre in Milan. Designed entirely digitally and completed in under two months by a team led by Stephane Janin, former Renault concept development manager, the Barchetta blends Italian design heritage with a flat smartphone-inspired battery architecture, all-aluminium construction, and drive-by-wire technology. Design Language: Italian Roots, Digital Execution
The Barchetta's design takes cues from Italian sports cars of the 1970s, particularly in the long, horizontal body language and the emphasis on a low, drawn-out silhouette. The team combined this heritage reference with design vocabulary from GAC's own concept history, specifically the GAC Time concept, to create a study that reads as genuinely new rather than a retro pastiche.
The body is constructed from mono-material aluminium, a choice that serves both the aesthetic goal of timeless simplicity and the engineering goal of minimal weight. Engineering: Smartphone Battery Architecture and Drive-by-Wire
The most technically distinctive element of the Barchetta is its battery architecture. GAC's design team drew inspiration from the way smartphones package their battery cells into an ultra-thin slab beneath the screen, then applied the same thinking to a car. The result is a battery layout that allows the Barchetta's chassis to be dramatically flattened, keeping the overall ride height exceptionally low and shifting the vehicle's centre of gravity as close to the road as possible.
All mechanical connections between the driver's inputs and the vehicle's mechanical systems are replaced by drive-by-wire technology: steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, and throttle-by-wire. This eliminates the physical columns, cables, and hydraulic lines that conventional cars require, freeing up interior volume and allowing the cockpit to be positioned with more freedom relative to the axles. The interior uses recycled plastic for the seats, which are suspended from a shell weighing just three kilograms. The compact drive-by-wire steering wheel occupies minimal space, reinforcing the sense of an interior that has been distilled to only what is necessary.
