HONDA WN7: A GAME-CHANGING ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE OR AN OVERPRICED COMMUTER?

HONDA WN7: A GAME-CHANGING ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE OR AN OVERPRICED COMMUTER?

Honda has officially launched the Honda WN7, its first fully electric motorcycle, marking Big Red's entry into the competitive electric two-wheeler market. Positioned as a naked streetfighter with sharp aesthetics and modern technology, the WN7 features an 18-kW water-cooled motor delivering 100 Nm of torque, comparable to the performance of a traditional 600cc combustion engine. Its fixed lithium-ion battery supports quick charging from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes via rapid CCS2, though the 81-mile (130 km) range limits its appeal to urban commutes and short rides rather than long touring stages.

Honda WN7 Specs: What You Actually Get

The WN7 comes in two power configurations: an 18-kW (50-kW peak) version for full licence holders and an 11-kW variant aimed at A1 licence riders, making it accessible across experience levels. Both variants share the same design package: a single-sided swingarm, double disc brakes, LED lighting throughout, and a five-inch TFT display with Honda's RoadSync smartphone connectivity. The underseat storage capacity of 20 liters is practical for commuting essentials. At 217 kg, the WN7 is heavier than most 600cc rivals, a trade-off that reflects its large fixed battery pack.

Is the Honda WN7 Overpriced?

Priced at GBP 12,999 (approximately $17,700 USD), the WN7 sits at the premium end of the electric motorcycle spectrum. At that price, buyers are choosing between Honda's brand reliability and range from competitors such as Zero Motorcycles and LiveWire, which offer faster machines with longer ranges at comparable or lower price points. The absence of a swappable battery system, which Honda had hinted at during the WN7 concept reveal at EICMA, disappointed potential buyers for whom battery swapping would have solved the range question for urban delivery and multi-shift riders. Honda's counter-argument is the 30-minute rapid charge speed and the strength of its dealer network for servicing and warranty support. As Motorcycle News notes in their first ride, the WN7 handles predictably and the belt drive system is impressively smooth.

Technology and Urban Focus

The WN7's technology suite is genuinely modern. The five-inch TFT panel runs exclusive electric motorcycle menus adapted for range management and regenerative braking settings. RoadSync integration handles navigation prompts and call management through a paired smartphone. Honda has also engineered the bike's software to display real-time energy consumption alongside the standard speedometer and odometer data. The single-sided swingarm and LED lighting give it a premium visual identity that stands out in urban traffic. For city riders who primarily charge overnight and cover under 80 miles daily, the WN7 makes a coherent case, with Honda's build quality and support infrastructure as its clearest competitive advantages.

Electric Motorcycle Market Context

Honda's WN7 arrives as the electric motorcycle market matures rapidly, with RevZilla's comprehensive first look confirming its competitive positioning. Production began in late 2025 with deliveries to European dealers from early 2026. The WN7 is currently aimed at European markets, where urban riding conditions and charging infrastructure suit its range profile best.
